More About the Author

I'm an ER nurse with training as Peer Counselor for Critical Incident Stress Management, the type of support provided to medical personnel and rescue workers after catastrophic events. It's been an honor to serve as clinical preceptor to many nurses, paramedics, firefighters and law enforcement officers.

My inspirational story, "By Accident", written after an equestrian accident that broke my neck, was chosen from 2,000 entries to appear in the best-selling, Chicken Soup For the Nurses Soul.

I'll admit to hearing those rumors about medical staff being prone to gallows humor, and that every hospital Trauma Room has pizza delivery on its Speed Dial. I'm pleading the Fifth Amendment. I will say, however, that I learned a valuable lesson from enduring life's gritty realities. It is simply this: She who laughs--lasts.

The reason my mysteries burble with comedy and a touch of romance is that I believe passionately that laughter and love are the very best medicine.

Born and raised in Northern California and the mother of two, I now live with my husband in the beautiful Hill Country of Texas. I am a cruise travel enthusiast and eagerly climb the gangway for book research that has found me singing onstage with a Newfoundland country band, hiking an Alaskan rainforest, doing the limbo atop a jet- powered catamaran and swimming with stingrays.

I hope my stories are good medicine for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars You go Girl!, August 6, 2006

Candy Calvert has created the funniest most mischievous klutz of a character(Darcy)I have met in a long time. I laughed, giggled, and hoo-hawd my way through the book. I give it the highest compliment I possibly can " I slowed my reading down because I was not ready to leave these wacky characters. " Thanks Candy Calvert and I look forward to more Darcy adventures. May they be as funny and witty as this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chart a course for a terrific new series!, January 15, 2006

I was lucky enough to receive an advance review copy of Dressed to Keel... and this one's a keeper.

After showing up at her boyfriend's house wearing nothing but a raincoat and a smile - only to be greeted by a Labrador Retriever and the boyfriend's wife - burnt-out nurse Darcy Cavanaugh decides to book herself on a North Atlantic cruise. And with hunky dance host Luke Skyler hanging on her words, gorgeous vistas, luscious buffets, and her best friend Marie on board, it's looking like a little R&R is just the ticket.

Until a rash of robberies sweeps through the ship, and Darcy realizes that the only thing the victims have in common is loads of dough - and lots of dances with Luke. Then Darcy's cabin steward winds up dead and hanging from a deck rail, and the ship's Nepalese security force whisks Marie away `for questioning'. When someone tries to drop a lifeboat on Darcy's head, she realizes she has to unravel things fast... or she may not make it to the next port of call.

With an unsinkable amateur sleuth, red-hot romance, fabulous settings, and a nail-biting finale, Dressed to Keel will keep you up all night - and leave you begging for more.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sort of Boring., July 11, 2007
This review is from: Dressed to Keel: A Darcy Cavanaugh Mystery (The Darcy Cavanaugh Mysteries) (Paperback)
I really had a hard time getting into this book. I didnt appreciate alll the nursing lingo - kind of like the author showing off her expertise? It was distracting. I also thought that the story was slow and while the ending had a nice twist, there really wasnt enough suspense. I will not read another in this series.
