"It's All the Same"... or is it?,
By
This review is from: Dressed Up As Life (Audio CD)
Ever since I first saw the Free Hugs video on Youtube, I have been in love with Sick Puppies. On their US debut, Sick Puppies did anything but disappoint me. Surprise me, yes. I was very surprised with how totally SOLID this CD was. Song after song, I found my hand retracting from the skip button. I can honestly listen to the entire CD right through and enjoy every minute of it. However, if you're in it just for the song "All the Same", you're in for a surprise when you hear the rest of the music.Sick Puppies definitely surprised me with the diversity of sounds they had coming from the CD. Although "All the Same" is a great slow ballad reminiscing of a slight Creed-like sound, much of their music is a bit more raw than I expected. A few songs I almost found myself head banging to, most notably the songs "Cancer" and "Anywhere From Here". For a few seconds when I first heard those two songs, I almost thought I was listening to a completely different band. In the song "Deliverance", they pull off a My Chemical Romance sound, and "The Bottom" almost reminds me a bit of Avenged Sevenfold. "Pitiful" and "A-hole Father" are some of my other personal favorites on the CD. Heck, all of the songs are good (with awesome, catchy lyrics might I add)! Overall, I was extremely impressed with the musicianship on Sick Puppies' US debut. As another review states, it isn't going to be revolutionary in any way, but it's still easily my favorite CD so far this year. Definitely pick up a copy, pop it in your stereo, and turn it up loud! I know that's something I'm going to be doing for many upcoming years.

A quality album with a few top notch songs. In a nutshell, however, most of the songs aren't as great as "All The Same" -- which is probably what brought the album to your attention in the first place. That being said, at least a couple other tracks such as "World" and "Deliverance" make it well worth the buy. I wouldn't hesitate to see them live and still recommend the album.

If you haven't seen the Free Hugs (All the Same) video, you really should check it out. The video is adorable and the song is great but the rest of the CD rocks out loud. For a 3 person band, they have amazing sound and depth. This is a must have CD!

My Favorite Album EVER,

I am a huge rock and roll fan spanning from the era of Bob Seger (LOL) all the way to the newly released Shinedown album, "The Sound of Madness." I've heard a lot of good albums and I would have to say the depth and magnitude of the Sick Puppies album, "Dressed Up As Life" makes it my favorite album to listen to! My buddy at school showed me a few of their songs, and of course I knew the song "All The Same" for a while, but was so surprised by the insane nature of the rest of their album! Every song on the album has a different feel and really gets you excited to listen, especially songs like Cancer, My World, and The Bottom! There really isn't a decent song on this album, they are all five-star quality and I would recommend this album and this band to any rock fan out there! I introduced it to all of my friends and they all love the Sick Puppies now! Amazing Album...looking forward to more material.

Excellent New Band,
This review is from: Dressed Up As Life (Audio CD)
With their debut album Dressed Up As Life, Sick Puppies deliver a deliciously heavy modern rock sound that is instantly catchy as well as considerably unique. Aside from the vocalist sounding mildly like the singer for Lostprophets, there are few comparisons I can make between this band and other modern rock bands out there today. Their style involves oftentimes prominently audible bass in the background, slow-paced to fast-paced guitar jams, and highly catchy lyrics which have been swimming through my mind for days now. So far, Sick Puppies do not seem to have captured widespread attention in the music world, but I wouldn't count on it staying that way for long. I can picture nearly every track on this album catching on with the radio, and as Sick Puppies distinguish themselves and become further well-known throughout the years they could potentially become a very popular mainstream rock group also (rightfully so). I have already heard their single "All the Same" played once on the airwaves, and their song "Cancer" has been performed multiple times by the Tonight Show band before cutting to commercial break. As for my favorite tracks on the CD, I enjoy nearly all of them equally but do especially recommend the fun quick-paced jam "Cancer", the slower but very catchy song "Pitiful", and the bouncy track "The Bottom". The hit "All the Same" is also a great one. Overall I'd give this album four and a half stars, and I am definitely looking forward to hearing more from this great new band.

Dressed up as... something different,

My first experience of Sick Puppies was a series of videos on YouTube. I had to check the listings twice, because the songs were so different. Indeed, the whole album featured songs that ran the gamut. A lot of the reviewers here tend to agree with that idea. If you like ballads, heavy screaming metal, spooky harmonies and hot chicks playing bass guitar, then you're most likely going to enjoy the album. A few of the songs have a very simple chord progression, but the lyrics and energy quickly get you passed that point. Be sure to check out their other CDs as well. You'll be glad you did.

This is a great album, most of the songs are enjoyable but my favorites are "My World", "Pitiful", "All the Same", and "Howard's Tale". I found this band when they were opening for an Evanescence concert. They really got the crowd excited, I would recommend seeing them live! After the show they spent a long time meeting fans and they actually take the time to chat, a very nice group. I hope they become more well-known soon.. :)

Solid Rock Album,

I was impressed by the EP that has been out by them for awhile and interested to see what they would do with a full length release. This is good stuff. There is a slight difference between "All the Same" on the EP and the full length, but other than that it seems like the recordings are the same. There's really nothing bad I can say about this disc, it's good all the way through. It's not ever going to be a "classic" and it isn't revolutionary but it's the best all around release I've heard so far this year. I always preview my discs before buying but if you were going to take a risk on a new band, I think this will appeal to a lot of rock fans. They've been getting heavy play on my sound system since the EP and I think it's only going to double with this release.

If you haven't seen Sick Puppies live you won't be able to appreciate how much fun you get from just 3 people. I saw this band the first time a couple years ago at ROTR in Columbus and since have seen them another 3 times and they never disappoint. This album fills in the time when I am not able to catch them live.
