Editorial Reviews

Frumpy Kitty Brown is a devoted wife - until she discovers her husband has a sweetie on the side. So Kitty throws the bum out and heads for the beauty parlor. Three years later, now-glamorous Kitty accepts grande dame Bouccy Bouccicault's invitation for the weekend. The plan: Bouccy's granddaughter is being romanced by a very attractive older man. Couldn't Kitty please win him away? Imagine Kitty's surprise when the attractive older man turns out to be her ex-husband! Screen diva Norma Shearer plays Kitty, managing the ugly-duckling-to-swan transformation with style. But it's Marie Dressler, playing Bouccy, who steals the show, knitting like Madame Defarge and quipping like Oscar Wilde.

This is not a great movie, not even really a good one, but for lovers of classic cinema it is a film worth watching at least once. "Let Us Be Gay" is almost a prototype for Norma Shearer's "The Women"; rougher, grainier, less effective but still fascinating in its own way. Containing what is probably the best ten minutes of real acting Norma ever did and a fun performance by the awesome Marie Dressler, the movie is absorbing even while ultimately missing the mark of good filmmaking.

Norma stars as Kitty: mother, housewife, and frump extraordinaire. As played by Shearer (so dressed-down she is unrecognizable for the first minute of film) Kitty is a sweet, innocent, utterly devoted mate to her husband Bob, unaware he is two-timing her with a decidedly unclassy tramp. Bob loves Kitty because she is basically his adoring Mom. She cooks for him, cleans for him, hunts down his ties and makes sure nothing disturbs His Majesty while he's sleeping. He doesn't love her as a woman, and the film portrays this as somewhat her fault and somewhat his. After his mistress spills the beans (in a surprisingly effective scene), Kitty orders him out and betakes herself off to Paris to undergo a whooper of a transformation. She emerges three years later as Norma Shearer, sporting gorgeous haute couture and enchanting every man in sight. When she meets her dopey ex at a house party, she must struggle with her feelings, and Bob must struggle with his cluelessness.

Bob is the film's biggest problem. Played by Rod LaRoque, Bob is feckless, inane, asinine, and a colossal drip. You could take him one of two ways: A poor performance by a miscast actor who gives Shearer nothing to play against, or a subtle performance meant to symbolize the kind of man a woman might worship for no reason whatever.

What's not to like when one has Marie Dressler & Norma Shearer on same bill! In my collection of currently 4300" titles on Laser Disc & DVD I just can't get enough Norma Shearer titles, having every thing of hers released so far, just hope Warners do more of her silents!

Fascinating to see Norma Shearer at the beginning of her career. As usual she is arch and artificial but the clothes and sets are fascinating. Gossip columnist Hedda Hopper demonstrates why she changed career.
