The ultraviolet light that comes with this kit was rusty and is only bright enough to use indoors, in a dimly lit or dark room. Unless you'll be using this in a bar/nightclub the light isn't worth the extra cost. Save your money and just buy the pen.

This kit contains both the iodine pen and the ultraviolet light. The iodine pen checks the paper to ensure that it is not a wood based paper from a copier, etc. I photocopied the front of a $20 and tried the pen on it, and the iodine turns black (then I shredded it), so we know the pen will correctly mark fake paper. This does not help with good fakes on rag paper. To check these you need to see the hidden bar in the bill. You can do this by holding them up to a bright light. The ultraviolet light does the same thing for you without walking around to find good light; shine it on the bill and see the bar. This kind of a kit may not spot the best counterfeits in the world, but those are rare. This kit can keep you from losing money by taking fakes that were made at home, etc. If you deal with a lot of cash in your business, this kit will probably catch fake bills that you get. Along with that, the UV light is fun! When the power was out the other day, I was shining it on things to see how the white areas would glow. You can really tell which items were washed with "brightners" that are nothing more than UV reflectants! Have fun!
