My upstairs shower drain has to be cleaned at least every three weeks to avoid major slowdowns. I learned years ago that commercially available drain cleaners not only didn't help, they often made the problem worse. In one bathroom, commercial cleaners made the crud soften and then harden back into a mess that I had to chip out (we have mineral-laden well water).

Then I discovered that a cup of baking soda followed by vinegar and then boiling water would keep the drain free-flowing. Unfortunately, I have to do this every week, I got three weeks behind, and this method wasn't working (and a plunger didn't work). I do have a snake but it's messy and I couldn't get the drain cover off.

I read that a half cup of washing soda followed by a cup of boiling water would work so I tried it. I put about a cup of these crystals down the drain, followed by two cups of boiling water, and let it sit overnight. The next morning I poured four cups of boiling water down the drain and the clog was gone.

Reportedly, it is the extreme alkalinity of the soda that dissolves the hair products that cause the plug in the first place. All I know is it works, it's cheap, easy, safe, and it won't damage my pipes or septic tank. Try it.

Soda crystals are really the best all around cleaners that even cleans clothes to perfection. I'm not sure why we have so many different cleaning agents for different parts of the same room when one cleaner can do it all. It's been used for thousands of years but now only used as an added ingredient. It works well even on industrial agents, including oil leaks.

On many occasions I've used it to remove paint off the floor,and it really works like magic. For my counters and stove I simply spray the surface and in less than five minutes all the grease and residue can be seen floating off the surface without a single wipe. I've always used natural cleaners but at times had to resort to bleach on tough stains, but this by far is the very best, working better than bleach without the smell.

One to two table spoons in two cups of hot water can clean a medium sized kitchen from top to bottom. For your laundry it's best to allow the clothes to soak first for about 15 to 2o minutes in the soda water before washing, especially when washing whites. For an extended use add several drops of lavender oil, rose oil, or almond oil for the added softness, and aroma. If mixed with coconut oil it will make a wonderful dish soap that will keep your hands soft after.

hi, setting up a camp in the hills. got this stuff for washing up there by hand. it is the old fashioned stuff can use for cleaning kitchen as well as laundry (the main use) even for unblocking drains. good stuff. NO PHOSPHATES for you 'greenies' out there.

I soaked my pans in this washing soda; it didn't help much. The burnt on items stayed. I did it about 3 times with a strong solution. It started taking off the protective layer on the pans but the burnt on food was still there. Granted the food had been burnt on for a very long while, but still. But when I made it into a mild mixture and sprayed on grease it took off the grease pretty quickly. It's expensive and I think I'd rather use something less abrasive on your hands (you have to use gloves) and less work (mixing and measuring the proportions of hot water to crystals).
