I've had a chance to try the new Drift HD camcorder for a few weeks now and I really like it a lot. What follows is my take and illustration of what you can do with it. First off just a quick note on the attached video review. I'm not really an extreme sports guy - I go mountain biking now and then but that's it - but I love these Action POV cameras for the cool shots they can add to even ordinary video productions. I saw a sequence in the AMC show Breaking Bad where they mounted a camera for a moment on a shovel, and that gave me the idea for this little sequence just to suggest some of the possibilities. The stable shots are from my Canon VIXIA HFS10, and the shots mounted on the shovel are from the Drift HD. To illustrate the audio that you get from the Drift HD, I kept all of the audio from the Drift until the very last shovel, when the audio comes from the Canon. Be aware that the video is compressed somewhat in order to be uploaded, and so this isn't up to the original quality of the video footage.

In brief, Drift's latest point-of-view action camera takes the design of the Stealth HD 170, and streamlines it, but also makes it even smarter. The body is more compact, literally smaller than the palm of my hand, which means it can fit into even tighter spaces, but it still retains the features that make Drift's POV cameras stand out among other, similar, products: the rugged design, and the on-board LCD screen that allows you to see what you're going to get ahead of time.

What's surprising is that even with this smaller design they really do not seem to have sacrificed anything, and have actually added a few useful features.

I just finished a month long Internet hunt for the best Helmet Camera and I found it in the Drift Innovations HD Mini!

Intended Use:
Skydiving
SCUBA Diving
Hiking
Bowhunting
Snowboarding
Military

So my search began a month ago and I had 3 Helmet Cameras in mind; Go Pro Hero, Contour ROAM, and Drift Innovations HD170. I had a buddy with a Contour and a Go Pro and both of them said great things, however, I never had the chance to put my hands on them and use them. I ruled out the Go Pro rather quickly just due to its extreme lack of the term "low profile". I have a third buddy who is a Freefall Instructor at YPG who told me that their Video Detachment uses Drift Innovations HD170 and that is was an awesome camera and that Drift had just came out with a 25% smaller, better version, this is when I was turned on to the Drift HD Mini. You can YouTube the 3 cameras and see for yourself the footage quality. They are all very similar, but you can tell that the Drift Mini's footage is slightly more clear. After I realized that all 3 camera's video quality was essentially to same I began looking at the option, accessories, and versitility of the Contour vs the Drift Mini.

With a 9MP phot capability it is essentially a 2 in 1, Video Camera and digital camera! Even though the Contour has a picture capability it is less than 9MP and there is no LCD screen to see what you are taking a pictue of. The LCD screen on the Drift is great for lining up your shot angle after mounting for video, or lining up to take photos, or reviewing your kill footage on the Helo ride home after extract.

I purchased this camera for our ski trip to Steamboat...which hasn't even happened yet (so I will update this review after our trip). But I just completed a thorough test with this camera, and am impressed.

The mounting system is extremely flexible, and provides the user with many options. For example, the goggle mount works perfectly with my Dragon Alliance APX Goggles (Jet Stealth) and my Smith Intrigue ski helmet. The goggle mount easily accepts the goggle strap with two slots in the mount's bracket. The mount has tiny "teeth" - almost like Velcro - which grip onto the strap. In addition, there are rubber feet on the corners of the mount which are wider than the goggle strap. These rubber feet stabilize the mount against the helmet, and provide friction so that mount will not slide on the helmet. The wide base of the goggle mount gives it a very stable foundation. The other mounts (adhesive flat and curved mounts) seem to be well built. What's great is that the universal mounting bracket give you flexibility to switch between various mounting options very quickly. The ability to adjust the angle of the mounting bracket is a nice touch as well.

The video quality is very good. The only negative is the fish-bowl effect created by the wide angle lens, but this is well worth it in order to have such a large angle. The objects in the center portion of the frame are not distorted; only the objects in the outer portion of the frame tend to be warped. Again, worth it for the large high definition frame from a small package. The 60 fps setting on 720p is AWESOME as it allows for slow motion...which is going to be great on the terrain park.

The other thing that separated this camera from the GoPro and Contour for me is the LCD screen.
