I've always been very dedicated to the metal of Flotsam and Jetsam. This album is roughly somewhere in the middle of their period, counting backwards from now. If you've never heard about them before and you would like to begin a flying start. I would strongly recommend "Drift" as I believe this is one of their strongest (if not the strongest) album ever! Everything adds up for these guys! The tracklist consists of 10 songs. Normally when you decide and opening for an album you would like a track to catch the listener from the start. I believe the discussion in the Flotcamp took ages! Glad i'm not to decide! All 10 tracks are simply highest standard! Truly solid quality!

Drift - The best heavy metal album ever,
By A Customer
This review is from: Drift (Audio CD)
Drift, quite simply, defines heavy metal. Every track on this album is a piece of art. This is the best heavy metal album ever - and if you are a fan of the excellent Momentum by Enertia, you'll know what you are getting - straight up vanilla metal delivered with precision and power.Flotsam and Jetsam's 5th album, this is also far and away their best release. Eric AKs vocals throughout must surely grant him "The voice of metal". The song writing is excellent, and as you'd expect from Neil Kernon, production is awesome. The album builds on the sound that was started with Quatro - but goes much further than Quatro did in defining everything that is great about heavy metal. Lyrics throughout are striking - the whole album screams defiance in the face of adversity. And the clever and catching riffs keep everything moving at an energetic pace. There's also an interesting blend of sounds - with the mystic eastern flavour of the intro to Empty Air, through the melodic power of Missing, to the thundering Smoked Out. Flotsam and Jetsam have produced a number of great albums, and two complete classics (Drift and their awesome debut Doomsday for the Deceiver - now nearly 20 years old and still sounding as fresh as ever). If you are into metal, you owe it to yourself to buy Drift.

One reviewer said this was the best heavy metal album ever. That's a pretty bold statement but he just might be right. I bought this album the day it came out back in 95 and I still listen to it all the time. The lyrics are much better then your typical metal fare and Eric A.K's vocal performance is truly amazing. The production captures the energy of the band perfectly. It may take a few listens to catch all the nuances in the songs but I think that's a sign of a great album. If your a fan of heavy metal and don't have Drift then there's a problem.

In the fold-out of 'High' at the end of the thank-you's there's a line: "lesson learned: it's okay to be metal." This album is proof of why it's okay.
'Drift' was ahead of its time when it came out. It stands strong today against anything coming out. Flotsam got a little experimental in some places and it seemed to be that they peeked about a decade into the future and channeled some of that energy. 'Missing' is one of the stand-out pieces for me as one of the most mature songs on the album both lyrically and musically. They weren't afraid to search for answers, point out their shortcomings and open their souls to the listener. And they were not afraid to veer slightly from the typical foundations of what constitutes a metal composition. Yet all of those alterations still produced a powerful and heavy song that drives forward without flinching. A.K. produces an aggressive vocal without sacrificing inflection and melody. What he started moving towards on 'Storm' and 'Cuatro' he refined on 'Drift.' 'Drift' is Flotsam's greatest album and one of the very best metal albums of all-time.

When I first finished listening to this disc, I figured this was the disc that was going to propel FloJet into the 'Metallica-like' area of superstardom but for some reason it was lost on the public. The songwriting is superb, the production flawless and the whole thing just works! "Me" starts off hard and "Empty Air" sounding huge, this album is clearly their best. This seemed to be a perfect blend of commercial viability while still retaining their integrity. Heros in my book!!

Every song on Drift is AWESOME!!!! From the Me to Poet's Tell...ALL SONGS ARE SUPERIOR!!!!! This was the last album by F&J to be on a major record label...MCA Records. Drift sadly did not get as notice as it should have rightly did during '95(album's release year) ,because grunge was still somewhat dominate . Knowing this though it amazes me that this EPIC GEM did not get noticed or even probably promoted. One these records labels namely MCA/Universal definitely needs to bring back Drift(Cuatro+When The Storm Comes Down too) back for sale in stores, as it has sadly been out of print probably since '96-'97. I ask how could anyone could ignore this EPIC is beyond me!!!! I am in the wrong profession!!! BRING FLOTSAM AND JETSAM DRIFT BACK!!!!

w00! Drift,

The thing I find with most metal bands is scince nu-metal stole the souls of the young, they've either had to stick to thier antequated sound or become more nu-metally. Damned if they do, damned if they don't; the purists call them sell-outs if they change to fit the market, and the newcomers call them old has-beens if they stick to the old sound.Thankfully, FloJet haven't been clouded by their fame and remain a true band of musicians. Drift is beautiful. It really shows how FloJet haven't evolved with the times, they've evolved as musicians. Every band should develop, and FloJet have done so in a new direction which remains close to their roots. More melodious than previous efforts, this is their best album to date. Not sell-outs, not has-beens, just excellent rock musicians worthy of more praise than they are given. Buy this album.

Flo-Jet is one of the most unique thrash bands ever... and Drift may be thier best-ever effort( although Cuatro may be just as good). i saw them live twice on the tour supporting Drift, one of these shows was at a small club. you could really tell these guys were proud of the work they did on this album (Drift), and they really had something to be proud of!.... it was one of the best times i've ever had. This album does'nt have a bad note on it.... and i consider it one of my top 5 favorite albums ever... thrash on guys!

Clean Metal,

This is a must-have for every metal fan. Every song on this cd is awesome."12 Yr. Old With A Gun", "Smoked Out" and "Poet's Tell" are my favorites from this release. "Me" is a powerful intro to the cd, going back and forth with a driving rhythm and power chords. Like many tracks on this cd, "Empty Air" is a bass-driven masterpiece. "Pick A Window" is one of the mellower tracks, yet not mellow by any standard..."Pick a window 'cause now your leavin'". The title for track 4 sums up the song pretty well...children killing children: "12 Yr. Old With A Gun" "Missing" would be the ballad, I am guessing. Very catchy, and very cool...I don't generally like ballads. Unlike most cd's, this one gets better as the cd proceeds. The cd never weakens or loses you. "Blindside" and "Remember" have awesome guitar, as usual, and will kick your [rear]!! "Destructive Signs" is probably my least favorite on this cd...I didn't say I didn't like it. There's a very cool acoustic guitar part that shows their versatility as musicians. The cd closes with 2 of my favorite tracks. "Smoked Out" is just that...SMOKIN'!! "Poet's Tell" is a brilliant closer. I can't quite put my finger on what it is that I like about this track, but it's a great song. All the songs have awesome lead breaks and sound great....every instrument can be heard clearly and the voice is mixed perfectly. I thought the voice was overpowering on "When The Storm Comes Down". "Drift" and "High" are, in my opinion, F & J's best. If you've never heard them, just go buy it!! |
