Book Description

October 20, 2008
Eve is a bold supporter of the rights of unborn children. She prays that God will wake the Church up and give believers a spirit of adoption, but she’s never had an opportunity to live out these prayers. One summer morning outside an abortion clinic, she is given a chance. Lisa is pregnant, trapped by fear and past tragedy. She is planning to abort her baby when she encounters Eve. Eve offers the unthinkable: she will adopt Lisa’s unborn baby in addition to raising her own unborn son. Have your baby, Eve pleads. I promise you, I’ll find a way to take her into my home. Let her live. Trent works at the abortion clinic where Eve prays. He keeps his head down and tries his best to live a normal life despite his profession. He barely dares to hope he and his wife Beth will one day have a child. When he meets Eve, he’s forced to examine his choices and doubts. The agreement with Eve leads Lisa down the long road of healing. Trent takes a more difficult path, while Beth comes to grips with her own past. And Eve must prepare for not one baby, but two, as God uses her to touch three very different hearts. Drifting In and Out of Sleep is a powerful story of redemption, forgiveness and restoration. It calls the Church to awaken fully to the issue of abortion and to act on behalf of the defenseless and voiceless. From prayer to adoption to offering forgiveness and healing, this novel challenges believers everywhere to take a stand for life. Sarah Hanks lives with her husband Kevin and her three children in St. Louis, Missouri, where they are involved in the Gateway House of Prayer, interceding and providing training for the children there.

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspiring 'can't-put-down' novel, December 10, 2008
This review is from: Drifting In and Out of Sleep (Paperback)
This 'can't-put-down' novel is an easy and profound read. Weaving together the past (e.g. ancient Israel)and contemporary times, with diverse and well-developed characters, this book explores the controversial issue of abortion from different perspectives. Chapter by chapter, it uncovers the heart-ache of abortion, offering hope and forgiveness in the mercy of God, as well as the redemptive purposes of God in adoption. Through it all, we see the effectiveness of prayer as a change agent and the power of unified prayer in a community. I highly recommend this book for those on both sides of the abortion issue. It will challenge you with the very heart of God on many levels.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Heartbeat of Pro-Life Intercessors in this Generation, December 6, 2008
This review is from: Drifting In and Out of Sleep (Paperback)
When reading this book, I identified time and time again with the main character, Eve, her prayers and her inner dialogue and struggles. Sarah Hanks beautifully shares the heart of Jesus in wanting everyone to find life and mercy (from the babies to the abortion doctors), the heart of intercessors who stand and pray for abortion to end, and the struggles that those on the receiving end of abortion deal with.

This book shows the mercy of God through the main story, juxtaposed with the realities of the seige of Jerusalem in the time of Jeremiah, because of the innocent blood-shed in the land. The kindness and justice of God are parallelled. This book left me with the desire to pray for abortion to end, but hopeful that, "Who knows? The Lord may relent from judgement and leave a blessing behind."

5.0 out of 5 stars This story makes you think from lots of angles, December 1, 2008

This review is from: Drifting In and Out of Sleep (Paperback)
This story comes to life...and I mean life. Character development draws you into the intimate world of a few key people through Eve's passion for life of unborn children and passion for children born into the world. Many complex elements of the greatest social and moral issue of our generation unfolds in the lives of the characters. Emotions run high, decisions are life changing, and boldness is called into action. I have read books on prayer, studied about Right to Life, and have been somewhat engaged in expressing my personal views on this topic...but I have never been exposed to the intricate details of what is involved in praying for unborn children, how personal and life changing abortion is for women and men, and how one should be moved to boldness when called into action. My daughter and I "fought" over this book for a couple of weeks until we both finished it. Thank you Sarah for being faithful and writing this book, you did a great job.
