Book Description

August 25, 2003
Readers and reviewers alike fell in love with Jimmy's Girl and The Puzzle Bark Tree. In her new novel, Drifting, Stephanie Gertler once again reveals her gift for exploring the ways in which families experience love and loss.

In the coastal town of Drifting, Connecticut, in a Victorian inn perched at the ocean's edge, Claire lives with her husband, Eli. Although her own children are grown, Claire is still haunted by the absence of her mother, who abandoned her when she was a baby. When Nicholas Pierce and his blind seven-year-old daughter, Kayla, come to stay at the inn, the young child's affinity for Claire begins to resonate within her. Unwittingly, Claire finds herself drawn into a struggle to save Kayla when dark truths begin to emerge about Nicholas. Ultimately, the challenge to save Kayla unleashes Claire's own need to find her missing mother.

Fearlessly plumbing the hidden depths of the heart, Stephanie Gertler has crafted a wise and moving novel that tests the bonds of mothers and daughters and their ability to transcend any obstacle.

From Booklist

When beautiful, restless Sulie abandons Jack and their two-year-old, Claire, the adoring father rises to the occasion, giving Claire an extraordinarily happy childhood, which is followed by her happy marriage to handsome Eli and the devoted mothering of two children. After Jack's death, Claire and Eli move to a seaside Connecticut town. Claire works part-time as a psychologist and manages a little inn in the summer, but she finds herself at loose ends after her youngest goes off to college. She becomes fascinated with a single father and his blind daughter, lodgers at the inn. Eli senses something wrong with the dad, but Claire colors these guests with her memories of her relationship with Jack. Gentler enriches a conventional plot with beautifully realized details, such as the blind child's navigation of unfamiliar spaces. If everything about the book doesn't work--Eli is too perfect, shifts in narration are occasionally too abrupt--its rich emotional tone and the durable themes are definitely rewarding. An excellent choice for fans of Charlotte Vale Allen and Luanne Rice. Roberta Johnson

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a page turner, June 6, 2005
This review is from: Drifting (Paperback)
After reading many disappointing books lately I figured I would give Drifting a chance since I enjoyed Windmill so much and I was not let down.

Drifting tells the story of Claire and Eli who are Inn owners in Drifting, Connecticut. Early one morning a stranger with a blind daughter comes knocking on the Inns door looking for a room for a few days. Even though it was out of season, Claire lets him stay. While he is checking in, his blind daughter, Kayla, wanders away from the car. Eli and Claire search for the girl but it is Claire who finds her. An instant bond in formed between Kayla and Claire. Nick, Kaylas father explained that he is on vacation and has custody of Kayla and the mother is out of the picture because she wanted to send Kayly away to a school for the blind.

Once this story gets moving, and the mysterious truth about Nick and Kayla come out, you will not want to put this book down.

With an underlying story about Claires mother abandoning her at the age of two, Drifting delves into mother-daughter and father-daughter relationships that is sure to capture your heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars author's best yet!!!, April 2, 2004
This review is from: Drifting (Hardcover)
Claire is a shrink and her husband, Eli, is a vet. They run an inn in a place called Drifting; their children have left the nest. Claire's mother left her when she was 2yrs old and she obviously has never come to turns with this seperation. She grew up with her father, Jack.

A father and his blind daughter, Kayla, arrive at the Inn and there begins the well crafted story. It was quite rivetting in parts and I found it really hard to put down! There are really two stories going on at once and the title means so much. It was abit unsettling at the close of the book so I had to start something lighter.

Excellent read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Read, June 6, 2004
This review is from: Drifting (Hardcover)
This exciting new author has penned a riveting narrative about how difficult it is to spot child abuse and abusers. Claire and Eli Cherney own the inn in Drifting. It is off season when the child and her father arrive. Although Claire senses a need in the child, it is sometime before she comes to agree with Eli that there is something not right about the father. Gertler's novel explores the delicate situation between mothers and daughters and how some ties never are severed. "Drifting" is not what happens when you open the pages of this haunting tale.
