You can never compare this band to anything you have heard before. Queenadreena are "power-drill in your stomach" hard, then rose-petal soft.
Every song on this album is a work of finest art, from the four drum-beats setting off "Pretty Like Drugs" to the bitter-sweet calm at the end of "For I Am The Way," Katiejane carries the listener through her world with the most brutal honesty. Her view of drugs as escapism through to her weight-problems in "My Silent Undoing." Katiejane pushes her voice past boundaries ever thought possible, very often wavering from near asthmatic little girl to roaring devil. This is the beauty of this band. Pained lyrics teamed with amazing vocals, not to mention killer riffs and sledge-hammer drum beats (provided by Pete Howard - formely of "The Clash"),Queenadreena are not to be overlooked. Oh, and I realise there is bit of a delay in getting album three over to the States, but just you guys wait. "The Butcher and the Butterfly," takes the band to another level...

The Queen gets angry again,

Drink Me is a return to the screaming and fright of the Daisy Chainsaw albums which featured the same guitarist and vocalist as Queen Adreena. However the melody of the previous album 'Taxidermy' is not lost. My favorite track on the album 'Sleeping Pill' is like a drug-fueled lullaby. The production on this and other songs is just amazing. There's such a contrast of different sounds on this single album. Very natural and raw at times and, really, even the electric sounding 'Sleeping Pill' still maintains that raw sound. I highly recommend both QA albums and hopefully their next will actually be available in the United States.

My wife thinks I like Queen Adreena because I want to hear Katie Jane Garside's voice and pretend she's singing to / screaming at me (just me) on a set from A Clockwork Orange while I'm chewing a stick of Fruit Stripe. But that is kind of beside the point.
I also like Queen Adreena because they make music like this. No one else does.

First things first: When you remove the disc from the jewel case take a good look at the picture behind where the disc was contained. Is that a picture of what I think it is?!? and if it is, is it Katie Jane Garside's?
anyway.... DANG! This disc is wonderful! The brutal first track rips things up nicely. Love that song. Other favorites:Razorblade Sky, Sleeping Pill, My Silent undoing, under a floorboard world. i find this the most consistent Garside, Gray affair yet, even better than the Daisy Chainsaw stuff. Great great great! back to that inner sleeve photo.......WOW

Former Daisy Chainsaw front (Katie Jane Garside) puts the harsh realities of the post-grunge era in proper perspective here. The "Pretty Like Drugs" video is a cold and relentless gem, a twisted psychotic statement of social disengagment that should've been heard stateside. Only local cable and MTV never had the courage to put it on the pop-hip-hop playlist (meaning most assuredly VH1 will never touch this masterpiece). Although, I do believe the video is still downloadable and floating around the internet somewhere. So much for cutting edge music television. "Pretty Like Drugs" is the first single from Queenadreena's "Drink Me" CD. A very intense, raw nerve ending release that includes the already classic "Kitty Collar Tight". "Siamese Almeida", "Razorblade Sky" & "For I Am The Way" are also not to be missed and will stay in heavy rotation on your CD changer. olofpalme63

Katie Jane Garside and Krispin Gray, formerly of the band "Daisy Chainsaw" crank it out louder and emotionally deeper on their follow up album to last years "Taxidermy". Katie Jane, the most expressive, talented and beautiful woman in music- has never sounded better vocally- yet (unfortunately) worse emotionally. "Drink Me" is not an album that you can only hear once and fall in love with; it's more along the lines of something that slowly by slowly infects you like a drug until you can do nothing but crave more. Whether ear piercingly loud or subtle like a lullaby played from a music box, all 11 tracks are exquisite in their own way, leaving an assault on the listeners senses that trigger flashes of memories just out of reach of placing a finger on. A puzzle you never want to finish as putting it together is all the fun- the poetry of Katie Jane is understood in parts, yet felt in others, but always savored with time. Here's to another great Queen Adreena album, and in hopes that their best is still yet to come, along with a tour of the states for their loyal and loving fans that are dying to see them live and in person!!

A bit of a disappointing 2nd album,

I hadn't heard much about Queen Adreena when I bought 'Taxidermy', their first album. After listening to it, just once, I was hooked. Her intensly angelic voice coupled with the bludgeoning background music really made you feel her anguish. So the new release was eagerly anticipated. Unfortunately, it seems Queen Adreena have been listening to Kittie a bit too much, because her subtle and searching vocals now resemble quiet verses and screaming choruses. Sure, you really do plummet into the oubliette of her soul, but lost is the spine shilling, goose-pimple-causing subtleties so prevalent on 'Taxidermy'. Now its all just bludgeoning. The riffs are huge, the noise hammering, but it seems nu-metal may have caught up with them. I hope this isn't the direction Queen Adreena will take.

Interesting, but flawed,
By
This review is from: Drink Me (Audio CD)
I thought this CD was interesting, but unfortunately has quite a few flaws that detract from it.
First of all, the singer is very talented. She's got a great voice and often writes very good lyrics. The drummer is also great. I was most impressed that they managed to get almost Steve Albini-like drums without Steve Albini. Unfortunately, the guitarist really ruins it a lot of the time, whether he's slipping into painful modern metalisms on the Evanescence-echoing "Kitty Collar Tight" and the flyleaf-like "Siamese Almedia" or bludgeoning you with a hideous, over-processed guitar sound (on almost everywhere it gets "heavy"). What is amazing about him is his ability to mimic heavy and hard without ever achieving it due to the album's production and the fact that his guitars are so processed they actually almost do sound like white noise, which is a description thrown around way too often. And no, I'm not afraid of distortion. Try listening to "Pretty on the Inside" by Hole to hear it done right. The only song I really, really like is "For I am the Way" because somehow the hideous guitar either works with it, or the song is strong enough to ascend above it. Either way, it's a great song. The rest are mostly very good, but are brought down by the fact that the guitarist constantly strays way too close to radio metal territory. Too bad, because this band has a lot of potential. |
