[Amazon finally put PSN game codes back on the site, so I'll put up my review for the game again since reviews for digital downloads aren't spread across platforms for some reason.]

There is no other game that I've played this year that's won me over as much as Guacamelee has. Whereas most people will be saying that Bioshock Infinite or The Last of Us is their choice for Game of the Year, my vote goes for this little beauty right here. No, I'm not joking. Guacamelee does so much right and gave me so much fun in just the right amount of time that it's impossible for me to say anything else this year has given me as much enjoyment. I guess I'm just a sucker for great PSN titles, as last year Tokyo Jungle beat out everything else I played, and just a few years before, PixelJunk Shooter did the same. Old school and newer gamers alike should try this game out if they're looking for a challenge or just all around good platforming action fun. And hey, the creators even managed to sneak in a couple of huge game references too, including Metroids, Mario, Castle Crashers, Journey, Grim Fandango and more! No seriously, there are practically legit Metroids and Chozo statues here!

Juan is a regular man who's in love with the president's daughter, Juanita. Sadly, things go horribly wrong when Juanita is whisked away by Calaca, a skeleton in a sombrero, who also kills off Juan. Things aren't over yet though! Juan awakens in the world of the dead, and is given a magical luchador mask by a masked woman, Tostada (yeah, I know). With it, he's able to return to the land of the living and begins his journey to rescue Juanita and stop Calaca from going through with his grand scheme of starting a new world order.

Gameplay is just like your standard Metroid or Castlevania game.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is true value for money! January 4, 2014

Usually, when you buy a game that sells at a much lower price than your typical PS3 game, your expectations are adjusted accordingly. I had heard really good things about this game, and when it was offered for under 5 bucks for PS+ members, I decided to pick it up. I was completely blown away! This is one of the best games I have played, full stop.

The graphics may not be the best out there, but the style grows on you as you play more and more and get immersed in the experience. The story is very good too and is told with a nice dose of humor, which helps keep things fresh. As you progress in the game the fighting becomes more and more complex and enjoyable. The fact that the game adds moves gradually allows the gamer to incorporate this seamlessly and be ready to tackle the levels as the game becomes more challenging.

I particularly liked the blend between arcade fighting and plataforming. There is a lot of depth in both of these aspects, with a multitude of combos, special attacks to break different types of shields, and dodging / evasive maneuvers. The game also includes the switching between the realm of the dead and of the living, and uses this extremely well both in fighting and in plataforming. The side quests are kind of fun, and help build your character up.

If I had to recommend one game and one game only from 2013, I think it would have to be this one. As crazy at it sounds, it takes the prize. This game has it all, and everyone out there should download it and have a blast playing it.

One of the greatest elements of the indie revolution in video games has been the return of long lost or scarce genres, and the "Metroidvania" genre (derived from Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night) has returned with a vengeance with some of the finest games in the downloadable space. DrinkBox Studios, developers of the excellent Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack, have given the genre another masterful romp with Guacamelee!, their best work yet.

Guacamelee! is a absolute charmer of a game, telling the story of an agave farmer named Juan who is killed trying to save the daughter of the local governor, only to be reborn as a luchador with the power to switch between the worlds of the living and the dead. Guacamelee!'s controls are rock solid with pitch perfect physics, lending support to what may be the best melee combat system to ever grace a 2D game. Guacamelee!'s combat is clearly inspired by Devil May Cry and its many successors, bringing deep, combo-based melee combat that only gets better as you lead Juan through the world and discover new abilities and power ups.

Exploring the world of Guacamelee! is pure joy. Featuring a brilliant, colorful, and unique Mexican-inspired art style and some of the best music of 2013, Guacamelee! always makes the player eager and excited to see what comes next. The game is drop dead hilarious. Older gamers will be in heaven here with the almost absurd amount of homages to classic titles of the 8 and 16 bit eras. Never taking itself too seriously, the game still finds a way to have an impact on the player, especially towards the end of the game. Also refreshing is the game's difficulty level. While not being so difficult that it's off-putting, Guacamelee!
