5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent recording from the 1974 Montreaux jazz fest., July 29, 1998

This gem is a must have for fans of live blues. Buddy Guy and Junior Wells perform with an electricity that has seldom been matched. The production quality of this recording is fantastic and reveals why Guy and Wells were considered by many as one of the best duos of modern Chicago blues. Perfect with cocktails and easily the life of the party, this disc smokes, baby! This set also features Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones on bass as well as the legendary PineTop Perkins on piano.

5.0 out of 5 stars A live masterpiece, March 6, 2002

This is certainly one the best live blues performance I have heard. I love the live version of Hoodoo man Blues - it is even better then the original studio classic from 10 years earlier. Checking on my Baby - is as good as this song ever got, even when Sonny Boy Williamson first did it.
Buddy Gut takes over the slower blues, such as "Ten years ago" - as only he can, while Wells is the master of the faster blues. Wells' rough vocals are offset by Guy's smoother delivery, and everything fits beautifully. The harmonica (Wells) and guitar (Guy) solos are all great, and the band sounds united and relaxed at the same time.
This is a CD for ALL those who want to listen to blues, performed live and exciting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Live Blues from one of Blues best dou's, October 11, 2006

Live from 1974 Montreaux jazz festival Buddy Guy and Junior Wells play with Pine Top Penkins and Bill Wyman. Sound quality is excellent, set selection is a nice combination of slow and fast tunes and Buddy and Junior do a nice job sharing the lime light. Buddy does a nice job of tone it down for Junior while still providing plenty of heat. Great rap with the crowd as well. If you get a chance to see Buddy live, please make the effort to see one of the last great blues men. This is a great CD for people who love live blues.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smokin' Indeed!, April 25, 2006

What else can be said? Buddy and Junior at top form! A highlight is Buddy's heartfelt introduction to Ten Years Ago, thanking the European fans for making them feel more at home sometimes then they feel while on tour in the States.

One thing very relavatory about this album for some people, would be finding out that Wyman is a truly excellent blues bassist, maybe as good as there has been...

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely Smokin'!, July 3, 2006

This album captures two of the best blues masters at their best in the mid-seventies. Blues was not on the radar during those years, but Buddy Guy and Junior Wells show how the blues was kept alive to an appreciative audience in Europe. (They even mention how they are not appreciated at home!)

Since it was a live recording, the mix was not quite as balanced as I would have liked, since Terry Taylor and Pinetop Perkins play some tasty guitar and piano, respectively. But overall, the band cooks through an all-too-short set! A must-have, if for no other reason that it is a great representation of great blues in the mid-seventies.

Best electric Buddy and Jr. cd I own! They really COOK on this one and the back-up band is TIGHT! The crowd is very responsive to the vibes and continuously spur the performance to greater heights as the set proceeds to its climax of Sonny Boy's "My Younger Days." Recording quality is excellent and the mix is top-notch. It's hard to believe this was a LIVE show! If you own just one non-acoustic cd from the Dynamic Duo, THIS IS IT!!! 'Nuf said!

Checkin up on my baby is my fav, then How can? Good versions of Hoodoo man and Messing with the kid, but not my favorites. (My favs of Hoodoo man are on Blues hit big town and Hoodoo man blues, both Junior albums. The best Messing is by Junior and Buddy on Blind Pig Sampler - Prime Chops. I also have a soft spot for the Blues Bros. movie version.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Buddy Best Album, April 28, 2008
This review is from: Drinkin TNT & Smokin Dynamite (Audio CD)

Buddy Guy embraced many different styles and sounds throughout his career. His Gibson sound during his collaboration with Junior Wells is the one that appeals the most to me, and if you are into Buddy Guy stuff I am sure you will appreciate this album.

A very energetic sound as the title of the album suggests, and it would really help you appreciate Buddy's roots from Chicago and Muddy Waters band all the way to his style today. In this album Buddy does not use overdrive as much and there aren't as many overbends as he uses these days. It's just pure, plain Chicago style blues that will give you the chills.

A couple of words about Junior Wells. Besides being a very good hard (chromatic and diatonic) player, he also was a great showman. His raw vocals and unamplified harp sound are straight out of Mississippi delta. Listen to Hoodoo Man Blues for his finest on this CD.

This is some serious blues people. Real American homegrown. Listen to "When you see tears"..Buddy Guy has lived this, and it pours out in this song..."I can't sleep at night because I'm nervous"....its so potent, its so honest, not some wanked out British imitation...not for casual listeners or kids...
