5.0 out of 5 stars The best drinking water book you can buy
This book is well named, since it is the definitive book on drinking water. It includes extensive information on water contaminants, water testing, bottled water, and home purification systems. This book is a primer for those interested in obtaining better quality drinking water. If you've spent ten hours or more researching the subject, this book won't radically alter your worldview. However, what it does do well is fill in the cracks. It features pages of distributors and suppliers; it discusses in depth the various types of filters and why they work; it does...

I bought several books on drinking water at the same time, and this one was clearly superior to all the others. Don't waste time and money; buy this book first!

5.0 out of 5 stars If you only buy one book on water, this is it., May 11, 1999
By A Customer
Excellent, specific, detailed information which you can use to make real decisions about your drinking water. How to purify it, what types of equipment are best to use for your problems, and where to turn to for help -- they're all covered. The book is very clearly written, and even when the subject matter turns technical, it doesn't take someone with a PhD in water to understand the explanation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why Should I Be Concerned About My Drinking Water?, September 25, 2006
This review is from: The Drinking Water Book: How to Eliminate Harmful Toxins from Your Water (Paperback)
Colin Ingram pulls the reader into his book by offering "Ten Quick Tips" to "wet" your appetite for the valuable detailed information that follows.

Ingram, who has years of experience as a scientific writer, articulates with clarity in this comprehensive guide to the importance of pure drinking water for maintaining optimum health. The chapter on water pollutants and the risk to health was startling. There is a logical order to the book as the next chapter deals with water testing and finding out what is in your water, and the best drinking water for good health. I was amazed to discover the various sources of commercial water suppliers and the number and variety of their products.

Several chapters deal with water purifiers and how they work. They include information on filters, distillers, alternative methods, and suggestions for combining types of purifiers. Ingram included suggestions on how to evaluate these systems, types of installations, a cost comparison of purifiers, and a comparison of the cost of bottled water versus that of a purifier.

I found the chapter summaries and author's recommendations especially helpful. He not only introduced primary and alternative methods, and combinations of purifiers, but also pros and cons of various views being expounded by vendors, environmentalists, and politicians.

The appendix, glossary, and index add to this compact, comprehensive manual on how to insure you are drinking safer water.

This is an important, informative, guidebook, calling for imperative action steps to do something about the water you are drinking.

This book is a primer for those interested in obtaining better quality drinking water. If you've spent ten hours or more researching the subject, this book won't radically alter your worldview. However, what it does do well is fill in the cracks. It features pages of distributors and suppliers; it discusses in depth the various types of filters and why they work; it does feature some interesting tidbits (faucet-mounted filters are largely ineffective!). This book only confirmed the direction I was going in -- to get a three-step desktop filter, the best that you can do without moving up to a distillation system.

On the negative side, occasionally the writer reveals a hypochondriac's fixation with germs and gives vent to his pro-regulatory biases. On the positive side, the book is short, eminently readable, and gives a solid overview of the subject with a few new nuggets of knowledge.

In short, useful, but not mandatory.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you drink water, you need to read this book., October 15, 1996
By A Customer
This book tells you everything you ever wanted to know about drinking water. There's good information on water-purifiers for the home, bottled water, vending machine water, and the quality of public water systems throughout the USA. It gives specific product recommendations on every kind of water purifier on the market. You'll probably think twice before drinking tap water after reading this book. If you're concerned about safe water for yourself and your family, this is the best source of information.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple, common sense information, September 17, 2006
This review is from: The Drinking Water Book: How to Eliminate Harmful Toxins from Your Water (Paperback)
I've had an interest in safe drinking water for many years. The market is flooded (pun intended) with advertising and claims. Mr. Ingram has made a difficult field very understandable. So much so, that you can make an intelligent decision on how to ensure safe drinking water for your family. I bought more copies and have given them as gifts.
He claims to be totally independent and from the book, it seems he is.
I am a new author, finishing my book Common Sense, The Joy of Living Smarter. I am listing this book in my reference chapter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, short and to the point, November 21, 2010

This review is from: The Drinking Water Book: How to Eliminate Harmful Toxins from Your Water (Paperback)
I liked this book because he got the point rather quickly and related it to me and my life fairly well. It answers a lot of questions and in a way that made me basically trust his opinions. There are literally countless books and "authorities" out there that claim to tell you what water is healthy and what isn't. But if you dig deeper you will find that in most cases, there is some ulterior motive hidden in there - usually to sell you something beyond the information you thought you were getting. This author, from everything I could tell, is the real deal. He is actually telling you about what is known up to this point without a specific agenda.

So why not 5 stars? Because although he is thorough, there are still other types of water out there he doesn't cover. For example, I have a neighbor that drinks from a machine that alkalinizes his water. He believes high pH water is good for you and he has a machine that does it for him. Well I thought I knew it all after reading this book and then realized there are more ways to treat water out there than the author goes into. So this is not the last book you'll need to read, only a very good start.

Also, there is a glaring omission about Bisphenol A (BPA). This is a relatively new concern with water and foods that come into contact with plastics. Apparently, some plastics emit this chemical but the author does not really talk about how this impacts many of the water filtration methods out there. For example, he says reverse osmosis removes `such and such' chemicals but doesn't specifically mention BPA. And what's more, he doesn't address the fact that the very filters that are removing the toxins are made of plastic themselves and may potentially re-contaminate water with a chemical it never had to begin with! So I thought this made the book less thorough and in-depth than needed to be truly complete.

IN CONCLUSION: If you're looking for a great way to learn about the basics of water and the different methods of filtering it, then this is a great book to start with.

5.0 out of 5 stars everyone should read this book, October 16, 2011

This review is from: The Drinking Water Book: How to Eliminate Harmful Toxins from Your Water (Paperback)
After all, almost everyone consumes more water everyday than any other single substance. Everyday we MUST ingest a certain volume of water just for our bodies to function. But how many of us know exactly what we are ingesting along with the water?

This book covers every aspect of water quality as well as purifaction equipment and methods. The author has spent years doing extensive research and testing on water quality and the product effectiveness of all types of water filtration and purification. In my opinion, for the modest price of $10, everyone one should know this. Just because you only drink bottled water, doesn't mean it's completely toxin free. This book helps you make informed decisions whether you are purchasing the water or the filtration/purification equipment. You will be able to sort the facts from the advertisement jargon.

I gave it 5 stars because it contains an incredible amount of knowledge for just $10!
