About the Artist

“Drinking from the Water Clock” marks the long-awaited debut from one of Chicago’s most exciting up-and-coming bands. The debut album pays homage to the band’s eclectic and worldly influences while at the same time molding the sum of those influences to create a raw and distinct sound. Guest appearing “Drinking from the Water Clock” are legendary Chicago bluesman and Telarc recording artist Son Seals and jazz guitar virtuoso Fareed Haque.

The music of Rebecca’s Statue leaps beyond genre-defining boundaries. With musical influences ranging from urban blues & groove jazz to world beats, funky pop, lyrical folk, hip-hop & techno, the four-man outfit prides itself on variance.

This energetic Chicago-based quartet first took shape in Evanston, IL in the spring of 1996. Original members Marshall Greenhouse (drums), Michael Grill (vocals/guitar/harmonica), and Dave Glines (guitar/vocals) were students at Northwestern University when they began cranking out sounds in the basement of a run-down house on the outskirts of campus. The band gigged frequently over the next two years, headlining at local clubs like The Morseland Music Room and Hog Head McDunna’s, and opening for national acts such as Col. Bruce Hampton & Fiji Mariners as well as Ekoostik Hookah.

During this time, the three gained valuable performing experience not only from their own shows, but also by jamming with some of the city’s elite musician’s. Mike and Dave honed their chops by sitting in on a regular basis with top notch Chicago blues acts like Sugar Blue, J.W. Williams, and Carl Whethersby. Marshall, meanwhile, spent time under the tutelage of nationally renowned jazz drummer Paul Wertico as well as teaching students of his own at Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music.

In October of 1998, bassist Chris Gangi secured a full-time position with the band. At the time, Gangi was fronting his own band, Jampico, hosting open mics on Chicago’s north side, and putting his skills to work as a studio musician for local pop, rock and country acts. When he sat in with the Statue the combination clicked.

Today, Rebecca’s Statue plays over 150 dates a year and is constantly earning new fans of all ages. With the newly-released Drinking from the Water Clock, the band will be bringing their eclectic sound more people than ever before.

Product Description

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff, September 22, 2000

For those music fans interested in tunes that make you move and groove, this album's a must-buy. Quite simply put, these dudes rock. Rebecca's Statue's varied influences open up a whole new window to jamming fusion. The only thing better than listening to the album is seeing the band live. So, you'll have something to look forward to -

5.0 out of 5 stars a cobblestone beat, November 13, 2000
By
This review is from: Drinking from the Water Clock (Audio CD)
As one of the best young bands working their way up in the Chicago music scene, Rebecca's Statue will knock you off your feet, literally. I've been seeing Rebecca's Statue live for a couple years now at all sorts of bars in Chicago and the suburbs, and I've always considered them one of the funnest bands to see. But it wasn't until I bought their album, Drinking from the Waterclock, that I realized how diverse and amazingly tight they really are. What I like most about Rebecca's Staute and in particular this album is how upbeat and genuinely exciting their music sounds. A combination of blue grass, rock and roll, and blues, this album sounds like it could have been recorded live on a little cobblestone street in South America or in a beautiful European piazza. This album has a beat that's unparalleled and a flow that will leave your feet tapp'n, your fingers snapp'n, and lyrics that'll be hard to loose.

5.0 out of 5 stars Peanut Butter Pancake, February 17, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Drinking from the Water Clock (Audio CD)
Like combining peanut butter and pancakes, the statue combine the most unlikliest of influences and create a delicious chewy mixture. The bluesy harmonica slayings of frontman Mike Grill are some of Chicago's best sounds. If I had fifteen dollars to spend and I could buy one new album, it would be Electric Ladyland Land by Hendrix, but since I already own it I will buy Drinking from the WaterClock. Keep rocking
