5.0 out of 5 stars Reading, sipping and enjoying!, June 9, 2007
This review is from: Drinks (Hardcover)
This book is not only a must for any collector, but for the novice too. Its rich history of drinks is truly complimented by the illustrations. Information on buying, storing, and serving, is more than helpful. Above all else, this book is just beautiful. I gave it as a Father's Day present this year.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the very best, July 3, 2009
This review is from: Drinks (Paperback)
I bought this book hoping to gain some general knowledge of spirits. This book does much more than that, I do wish there was more dedicated to the history and the making of each spirit, but I think the author does a fantastic job at providing a summary for each.

The most popular brands available for each spirit and cordials are listed here, most of them with pictures of the actual bottle, which is useful for me as a new bartender as it helps me recognize the bottles easier and even read about the very products i use every day.

The collection of drink recipes is organized by flavor, but not in the Tequila-Vodka-Gin etc, Order, but rather by using categories like rich, tangy, sour...I find this very useful, and it goes as far as telling if the drink is better as an after dinner drink, anytime, etc.

This book also includes a good section on wines, and even on how to pair them up with food. An entire chapter for beer can be found here too.

This is without a doubt one of the best books on drinks, it is very informative, beautifully designed, classy and well organized.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy it, unless you are looking for drink recipes only, while this book contains several classic cocktail recipes, it goes well beyond that.

Good presentation of various forms of alcohol and their origins, ingredients, and their general ratings. Neat reference for leisure time perusal. I feel much smarter now about my occasional choice of beverage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Book is really worth another look., February 19, 2009
This review is from: Drinks (Paperback)
With the other reviews I was beginning to wonder if anyone had actually read the book, not one review other than great book, he's done it again, wow, great read. I thought that everybody had either been paid or were just Mr. Gasnier's friends. However, I have read this book and it is worth a second look.

This book covers wines, beers, liquers, and ciders. And every variation thereof. On page 26 he covers how to taste wine and it is a very good introduction of the CAT (color, aroma, taste) process. I also liked the food and cheese matches for all of the wines. He breaks them down into the same categories as his other book A Taste For Wine: 20 key tastings to unlock your personal wine style.

His section on brandy and cognac is worth the price of the book alone. And his explanation of the new Hennessy Fine de Cognac is spot on.

He has another section of the exotic fruits and all the liquers that come from them. There's detailed descriptions of Pimm's, Soho, Maracuja, Passoa, Midori, Lena, Bols Kiwi, and then my person favorite, Chartreuse. This is not a cocktail mix book, it's strictly definitions and origins of all the different liquors on the market. This is not for a bartender to mix drinks but if you're a bar manager you would need to know this information just to increase your knowledge base.

The one liquor that was missing was Nuvo. I was surprised but perhaps it will be included in the next edition. Also, for some reason all the pictures of Mr. Gasnier are in the same outfit and many of them are the same picture. He's had other books like that so I guess he must not like to be photographed in different situations. They're all in the CAT poses. The other photos are beautiful, the ones of the elixirs, wines, and cocktails are very professionally done.

Enjoy, it's a great coffee table book.

I love to cook, but lack any real knowledge on wines, beers or spirits. This book is both visually beautiful and informative. I honestly enjoy just reading through the stories and description of different beverages; it's quite fascinating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Drinks!, August 20, 2008
This review is from: drinks (Hardcover)
This is a fantastic book- a terrific resource and actually enjoyable to read! Gasnier's passion for flavours, scents, colours and textures really comes through in the text. He is very thorough in his descriptions and histories of the hundreds of libations- wonderful!
Contains sections on pairing wine with food, cocktails, martinis, layering drinks/shots, and various trivia on the origins of various liqueurs.
Love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, mainly for wine and beverage professionals but not only., January 5, 2006
By
This review is from: Drinks (Hardcover)
Mr. Gasnier, Master Sommelier and his team have really done a great job. This book is the most modern book that you can find internationally, about the huge world of drinks (wines, spirits, beers, cocktails). The way that the book is written is really interesting. It is at the same time simple but very-well presented. The photos of the book are just perfect. This book is a real "must" for drinks and cocktails lovers, and a very useful element for ambitious sommeliers.
