Keep your pet healthy with the Drinkwell Lotus Ceramic Pet Fountain

Water is essential for supporting your pet’s important bodily functions. Giving your pet filtered, oxygenated water entices your pet to drink more and get the proper hydration essential to their health. The Drinkwell Lotus Ceramic Fountain combines hydration benefits for your pet with a stylish design that complements your home décor. Made of ceramic, this fountain is easier to clean and is more hygienic. The multiple, patented free-falling streams aerate your pet’s water with healthful oxygen, and an activated carbon filter removes bad tastes and odors, providing the best hydration solution for your pet in a modern, beautiful design for you.

Is your pet dehydrated?

To check if your pet is dehydrated, gently grab a loose fold of skin, either on the back of the neck or in between the shoulder blades and release. If the skin snaps back into place, your pet should be okay. If the skin slowly returns into place, your pet could be dehydrated and may need to be checked by a veterinarian. On average, your pet should drink one ounce of water per pound of weight daily.

What is activated carbon?

The activated carbon replacement filters are made of coconut shells. The coconut shells are put through a process called carbonization, which removes all other elements other than carbon. The carbon is then ‘activated’ by adding back oxygen, creating a material suitable for adsorption. Activated carbon absorbs basic water contaminants, as well as chlorine from tap water. This helps improve the taste and remove odors from basic drinking water.

Veterinarian Invented by Dr. Mary Burns, DVM.

Veterinarians recommend fountains because the moving water encourages pets to drink more for proper hydration. The free-falling stream also adds oxygen for freshness, making the water more appealing to drink. Proper hydration promotes healthy kidney function, cushions and lubricates joints, speeds recovery time for sick or injured pets and helps your pet’s body with temperature regulation.

*DAILY WATER INTAKE: A healthy daily water intake range for cats and dogs is 0.3 - 1.07 oz per lb of the pet's actual weight (20-70 mL per kg). For the purpose of this chart, the maximum intake of 1 oz per lb was used to calculate the estimated days filled. Your pet may drink more than the recommended amount due to high activity level and/or other external factors, such as the heat. If your pet is consuming significantly more than the indicated amounts above, this may be a sign of polydipsia or other ailment, please seek the counsel of a veterinarian as soon as possible.

**ESTIMATED DAYS FILLED: Calculations were made on a single pet basis and do not account for multiple pets' use of the fountain. All calculations were made using the maximum level of water intake for each specified weight. The above calculations do not take into account water evaporation or other external factors, such as spilling.

Pros: The cats both love it, the foam filter does a great job of keeping hair and gunk out of the motor, the plastic plumbing parts are easy to clean and the ceramic bowl does not "slime up" like the old plastic bowl did. Our last fountain used the same motor-- it would get *nasty* and was very annoying to clean. I was skeptical that the foam filters would do anything, but they really are a vast improvement.

Cons: The power cable passes through a hole in the bottom of the bowl and up through a little plastic tube with an attached washer. The washer seals at the base and the tube extends above the water line at the top so the bowl doesn't leak. This plastic tube is very fragile and ours cracked along the threading that connects with the washer after only two cleanings. Once this happens the bowl leaks like crazy.

There is a replacement plumbing kit available from the manufacturer for about $10 USD including shipping, but it looks like it's sold out. I hope that means they're looking for another supplier, but who knows?

Also, while the lack of a water tank can be viewed as a positive (one less thing to have to clean out) it also means this fountain doesn't hold enough water to last through any sort of vacation. When it was working, our fountain required a top off every other day.

I would really like to recommend this fountain. . .other than the tubing issue it really is a great product. If you do decide to buy it, be very careful with the power cord tube.

This is my third pet fountain, so I more or less know of what I speak! My first fountain was a Petmate Fresh Flow, which the cats loved, and I liked just fine... until I had to clean it. The whole assembly had so many parts and so many unreachable corners, that it was pretty funky. And I had to clean it once a week minimum, or the pump would clog right up. Finally, I let it go too long, I think, and the pump, alas, died.

So I decided it was time for a new pet fountain. First, I went for the Pioneer "Big Max," because, well, it came in two parts. When you've been picking apart your pet fountain once a week and cleaning it with a bottle brush, a two part ceramic fountain sounds like just the thing. The only problem was... it was LOUD. I mean, not any louder than your average aquarium, but I don't have an aquarium. I had a really loud pet fountain pump, though. I kept thinking I'd get used to the noise of the pump, as humans are very adaptable creatures, but, no. I considered buying a new pump, but the way the Pioneer fountains are set up, you have to buy a pump with exactly the right dimensions -- down to the millimeter.

So finally I head down to PetSmart, thinking I will just replace the Fresh Flow. At least it was silent. But it turns out all PetSmart has now is this super-fancy Fresh Flow that blasts the water with UV rays or something and costs... I don't remember. It was a lot of money for a glorified water bowl, though.

Then I saw the lovely Lotus.

First thing I know about this fountain is that it looks GREAT. I mean just lovely. It is also of a good size (about a liter and a half or a third of a gallon) which I liked. Then I got it home and discovered my favorite part.

It is quiet. I can't hear the pump even on the highest setting.

My cat absolutely loves this fountain. We bought it because we had the hardest time getting her to drink enough water. I tried the original Drinkwell fountain, and she hated it because the pump made too much noise. But the moment I turned this one on, she made a beeline for it and now is obsessed with it. Sometimes she gives her toys a "bath" in it; it's so funny. So for me it's a hit.

My fountain is also mostly ceramic. The only plastic pieces are the part that sits inside the bowl, where the water spurts out at the top, and the pump pieces. Everything else is ceramic (the base and the little bowl where the water spills out of). I have had no problems with leaks, and I've cleaned it several times.

Cleaning-wise, it's pretty easy. I know other reviewers (including ones on PetSmart's website) seem to have a hard time with it, but for me it's not bad at all. All of the pieces come apart easily. I do have a bit of a hard time getting the plastic piece that sits inside the bowl to fit back on; you've gotta get it just right. But it's not a deal breaker for me. Honestly, with how much my cat loves it, the only deal breaker for me would be if the whole thing disintegrated or started shooting sparks or something.

The thing I find most annoying is that PetSmart doesn't carry the replacement filters in store, so I have to order them online.

Oh, and I would advise anyone to be careful with taking the advice of a reviewer who has never actually used the product he or she is reviewing. Just saying.

The cats really liked this but first we found it hard to find replacement filters. Had to order online. Then it is incredibly difficult to put back together after cleaning. That said, we cleaned it regularly and put in new filters. One day it just stopped; we had it about 4 months. Again, after a very thorough cleaning and subsequent difficulty re-assembling it, it still won't start. Replacement pumps are "out of stock"; no surprise after reading others' comments. Went back to using regular water bowls but the cats aren't super happy and neither am I. Would welcome any suggestions about a better water fountain.
