Keep your pet healthy with the Drinkwell Multi-Tier Pet Fountain

Drinking more water is crucial to any healthy diet and contributes to better health in both humans and pets alike. On average, your pet should drink one ounce of water per pound of weight daily for proper hydration. Developed by a Veterinarian, the Drinkwell Multi-Tier Pet Fountain provides your pet with 100 oz. of fresh, filtered water. It helps keep your small to medium sized pet hydrated by providing multiple places to drink with lower and upper dishes. The upper dish is elevated making it ideal for senior or arthritic pets. The patented, free-falling stream aerates his water with healthful oxygen, and an activated carbon filter removes bad tastes and odors, helping your pet stay hydrated and healthy.

Is your pet dehydrated?

To check if your pet is dehydrated, gently grab a loose fold of skin, either on the back of the neck or in between the shoulder blades and release. If the skin snaps back into place, your pet should be okay. If the skin slowly returns into place, your pet could be dehydrated and may need to be checked by a veterinarian. On average, your pet should drink one ounce of water per pound of weight daily.

What is activated carbon?

The activated carbon replacement filters are made of coconut shells. The coconut shells are put through a process called carbonization, which removes all other elements other than carbon. The carbon is then ‘activated’ by adding back oxygen, creating a material suitable for adsorption. Activated carbon absorbs basic water contaminants, as well as chlorine from tap water. This helps improve the taste and remove odors from basic drinking water.

Veterinarian Invented by Dr. Mary Burns, DVM.

Veterinarians recommend fountains because the moving water encourages pets to drink more for proper hydration. The free-falling stream also adds oxygen for freshness, making the water more appealing to drink. Proper hydration promotes healthy kidney function, cushions and lubricates joints, speeds recovery time for sick or injured pets and helps your pet’s body with temperature regulation.

Key Features:

1. Patented free-falling stream adds more oxygen for freshness, encouraging pets to drink more water.
2. Elevated drinking dish for easy access, perfect for senior or arthritic pets.
3. Receiving ramp reduces splash and sound of falling water.

*DAILY WATER INTAKE: A healthy daily water intake range for cats and dogs is 0.3 - 1.07 oz per lb of the pet's actual weight (20-70 mL per kg). For the purpose of this chart, the maximum intake of 1 oz per lb was used to calculate the estimated days filled. Your pet may drink more than the recommended amount due to high activity level and/or other external factors, such as the heat. If your pet is consuming significantly more than the indicated amounts above, this may be a sign of polydipsia or other ailment, please seek the counsel of a veterinarian as soon as possible.

**ESTIMATED DAYS FILLED: Calculations were made on a single pet basis and do not account for multiple pets' use of the fountain. All calculations were made using the maximum level of water intake for each specified weight. The above calculations do not take into account water evaporation or other external factors, such as spilling.

I purchased this fountain a couple months ago. This fountain seemed pretty great. I love the inline power disconnect for filling. But then after about a month came the noise, first it only happened every once and awhile. It was the definitely the "chugging" sound all the other reviews mention. It's the pump gasping for more water, but why? A few days ago I decided to disassemble the fountain, give it a good cleaning and tested the pump. Seemed to work great. I rinsed out the filter, put it all back together and silence! Then yesterday it started making noise again. So this evening I did my research. I read reviews about removing the filters here and then I went to the manufacturer's website and read the manual. In giant bold on page 4 it says "FILTERS: CHANGE EVERY 2 to 4 WEEKS". I went back to the fountain, removed the filter, no more noise.

Basically a dirty filter prevents water from flowing from the main tank into the pump area at lower rate then the pump operates at. So the water gets below the recommended 1 inch height in the pump area and the noise starts. If you clean your fountain and replace your filters you'll have no problem. Don't want to pay for replacement filters, toss it and just keep the tank clean more often. A lot of the reviews are operator error, except about spilling or for dogs (it could use a higher back wall).

My overall review is to buy and only use the filters if your going to maintain it. If you want a fountain that you can set and forget, this probably isn't for you.

I own the original drinkwell pet fountain. So I was excited to have this one. I thought it looked like it would work great for my two pugs. I read some other reviews and saw some complained about the noise. I wasn't so worried because it was going in my mudroom but I have to admit even when I walk through the mudroom to go outside or let the dogs out I think, "wow that's kinda annoying". It isn't quiet like the original drinkwell pet fountain. WAIT...it gets worse. The fountain always needs to be filled or it makes this annoying LOUD chugging sound. The water level isn't even half way down and it needs to be filled again. WAIT THERE's MORE!! I wouldn't buy this because the design is so poor. What do I mean.......take a closer look at the picture. The top tier the water level is to the very tip top. But the basin doesn't go around the back side. My dogs come up to lick the top and guess what?? YUP...with the licking motion both my dogs tongues push the water right out the back side onto the floor. EVERYDAY, ALL DAY, NO MATTER what I do there is water all over my floor. BIG puddles of water!!! The top tier needed to be deeper and not allow the water to come all the way to the top and the basin needs to be all the way around. What a waste of money!

DISCLOSURE:

I am an Amazon Vine Reviewer that selects free products in exchange for my reviews. Normally, my review would have the following warning in green at the top "Customer review from the Amazon Vine(tm) Program." The reason this review does not show this green warning is because Amazon Vine made a mistake and sent me this product a couple of times instead of one Drinkwell Outdoor Dog Fountain High Capactiy 3.5 Gallon Waterer with Dual Filtration. For some reason they cannot seem to rectify this error so I want the readers to know that I did not purchase this item in case that is a concern to you and in case it weighs in on how you perceive this review. Also, since I feel like it's stealing if I don't review all the products I receive (I review 100% of the products I receive), I'm submitting my review here. Do realize, though, that this is not a fountain I would have ever selected for my cats to use.

MY REVIEW:

This is my third pet fountain. I've owned a Petmate Fresh Flow Pet Fountain, 108-Ounce, Bleached Linen over 8 years ago which was okay and I currently own for about 6 or 7 years a Drinkwell Platinum Pet Fountain 168oz which I and my four cats absolutely love. Both of those fountains are ones that I purchased myself. I've come to respect and really like the Drinkwell product line based on how well the Platinum has performed.

However, this fountain is flimsy and of low quality.

I almost did not buy this due to the mixed reviews. But I got a good price in a close out sale and figured I’d give it a try for my thirty-pound spaniel.

There is a noise from this fountain; the pump generates a low level hum. After 16 to 32 hours, there is a slight change in the hum, it gets slightly louder, that signals to me that the water is low. So I simply bring the water pitcher to the fountain and add water. No biggie. I actually like the tonal change; it is a nice reminder to add water. The prior water bowl had an attached water tower that I could never see the water level so it would occasionally run dry. I doubt this will happen with this one.

The high sides of this fountain actually keep dirt and dog fur out, much better than any previous pet bowl. Dirty bowl or clogged vents near the pump, has been slight in my experience. I do have a breed that sheds a lot. I also keep his dog food and water bowls on a cloth placemats, so that helps quite a bit in keeping it all clean and dry.

Cleaning the water fountain is a snap. It should be done weekly, based on various complaints I actually dreaded it. It was very straight forward (I am a kitchen person and have a lot of gadgets), it was simple to push in the two plastic tabs holding the upper and lower water trays together. In three minutes, I scrubbed it with a baby bottle brush, rinsed, put it back together and then refilled it.

This fountain is much easier to maintain than the last style he had with an attached water tower that I had to soak in a bleach solution and rinse multiple times to clean a buildup of some microbial substance that grew in thin sheets on the walls of the water bottle and into the drinking tray. The old water bowl/water bottle feeder looked simpler but was a true hassle to clean and keep clean.
