5.0 out of 5 stars My first!
Wow, I was looking for a new pin cushion (from Amazon) when what to my amazed eyes do I see but an image (mirage?) of the very first pin cushion I ever owned. There, right there on the page--the tomato pin cushion with the little baby attached! Identical to the one I had some 45 years ago!!

5.0 out of 5 stars My first!, February 14, 2010
This review is from: Dritz Pin Cushion Tomato with Strawberry Emery
Wow, I was looking for a new pin cushion (from Amazon) when what to my amazed eyes do I see but an image (mirage?) of the very first pin cushion I ever owned. There, right there on the page--the tomato pin cushion with the little baby attached! Identical to the one I had some 45 years ago!!

When did I get that pin cushion? It must have been in ninth grade when I took Home Economics I so I could learn to sew*. What I do remember is how functional that little tomato was. It was perfect for the right number of straight pins used in pinning the pattern to the fabric. When I say "right number," I mean the pin cushion was the size of a medium-sized tomato and just right for all the necessary pins.

What amazes me is that Dritz still makes the same pin cushion. Don't you love it when a company knows it has a good product and leaves that product alone, opting for the tried and true instead of something "newer and better." However, one can get that tomato in other colors now and a larger size.

My mother called while I was writing this review. During our chit-chat, I mentioned the Dritz tomato pin cushion and my review. She informed me that the pin cushion was hers, not mine. I remembered it because I used her sewing machine and all her sewing supplies. However, she said, what was hers was mine, too, and that's probably why I remember it as being mine.

But the most amazing thing? She still has and uses that very same pin cushion! Even though I use another brand now, I am giving five stars because Dritz has not changed its product! I admire that!

*Home Ec was one of two of the most practical and beneficial courses I took in high school. The other? Can't you guess that typing was the other? I think, today, that it is called Keyboarding. I wonder if Home Ec is still on the menu? It should be!

Addendum 11-27-10: At the time I wrote this review, I had no idea what the purpose was of the little hanging tomato. I recently read in a sewing book that it is filled with emery product and is used to stick pins and needles in to sharpen them!

My Mom had one of these and the little emory strawberry keeps

the needles sharp and takes off the little burrs that cause

pulls. Love it.

Like other reviewers, I thought I was purchasing the Tomato Pin cushion I had owned as a girl... big mistake!! This so called "cushion" is ridiculously small, I can only see it working in a 'Sewing tableau' of small dolls or teddy bears. It is lumpy & uneven, not fully stuffed, so light weight it will not sit upright & feels almost crunchy inside. A definite disappoint on every level imaginable. If you're into collecting miniatures...this may interest you, otherwise I can see no other earthly purpose for purchasing this item!

1.0 out of 5 stars Item not the same as description!, December 3, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dritz Pin Cushion Tomato with Strawberry Emery
The product description lists this as 2.9 x 2.9 x 4.5 inches. The item I received is less than 1.5 x 1.5 x 2 inches. This item is not what was advertised, and not nearly big enough for regular use. This false advertising is not acceptable; it is going to be returned, and the seller put into my "do not buy" list.

I needed a 3" pincushion. The description on this one said it was 2.9 x 2.9 x 4.5". I figured that, take away the little strawberry sharpener attachment, this one would do. I was wrong. It's much smaller than I expected. It's fine if you don't need a certain size.

1.0 out of 5 stars Tiny, useless, and not even a Dritz, February 20, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dritz Pin Cushion Tomato with Strawberry Emery
I bought this as an accessory to go with a gift, but it would probably make a better child's toy. The description said 2.5" in diameter, but this thing didn't even measure 2". Tiny is an understatement to those who remember this in Mom's sewing kit, but this is entirely useless as most needles would probably poke right through. The label on the bag didn't even say Dritz. This was most likely a knock-off bought for a few pennies and resold for a few bucks to people unwilling to lose money on the return costs. This was returned with malice and I went to Wal-mart and bought the real thing for $1.47.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the average DIY sewer, December 14, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dritz Pin Cushion Tomato with Strawberry Emery
Admittedly, I am not a great sewer. The most I do is simple patch jobs, buttons, and as-needed repairing of seams. I know how to sew by hand. This is perfect if you need a place to put and sharpen needles on a rare basis for as-needed personal repairs. I don't recommend this if you're a serious sewer. This is perfect for casual/DIY fixers, not people that really know what they're doing.

It's a great product for what I need it for. I wouldn't recommend it to any serious sewer.
