This is a good solution for people who aren't setting a lot of snaps, if you are planning to a lot of snap setting I would recommended snap pliers. This works with prong set snaps also made by Dritz. You put the round prong setting in the bottom, put the item you're putting the snap in on top of that, close the first lever and put either the female or male end of that into the circle over your fabric and prong setting, close the top lever and hit it with a hammer. For lightweight fabric, this works fairly well on the first try. It will also work okay on lightweight rubber, latex or leather as long as you poke the prongs on the setting through first. The snaps are secure and open and close easily without being in danger of coming undone too easily.
The only issue I have with it is that it is a light weight plastic and it's hard to feel secure hitting it with a hammer, and with these style snaps it can be a little hard to tell which side is right side up for the female sides of the snaps. If you look at the female side carefully, one side has a slightly larger lip, that lip is the bottom of the snap, the part that works with the prongs. If you don't put it in that way, the prongs won't crimp correctly in the snap.
It does work though, and I do recommend them for light applications.

I bought this so that I could replace the velcro on baby bibs with snaps. It turns out that the ridge on the edge of the bib is thick enough to prevent the fastener from closing, rendering the tool useless. I would say this tool is ONLY useful if you are using thin fabric with unfinished edges.

Pros:

Cheap
Comes with four size 16 snaps
Worked, more or less.

Cons:

Obnoxious to use - There are two indentations for placing the toothed part of each half of the snap, one for size 15 and one for size 16 snaps. If you are using the size 16 indentation, which you may well do, as this comes with size 16 snaps, you will only have about one inch of room past the snap. So, if, as in my case, you need to install the snap 3" into the fabric, you have to fold the fabric over on itself twice, which will prevent the device from closing all the way, even when you hammer it, and the snaps will not appear as snug against the fabric as you might prefer. Further, it is really difficult to prevent the toothed ring from coming out of the indentation as you bring the middle layer of the device down.

Durability? - Just from installing the four snaps that came with the fastener, it is pretty well banged up looking. I don't know how many hammer blows moderately hard plastic is meant to endure, but probably not too many more than it will receive in another four snaps.

Time - It took me over an hour to install for snaps onto a piece of tarp because of the above difficulties.

Results - Because of the difficulty in setting up the lower, toothed, part of the snap in the fastener, I wound up with one of the four snaps not being set right. One of the teeth is jutting outside of the snap ring (luckily this wasn't for clothing) and one is jutting into the center of the ring.

I guess if I had ever seen or used one of these before, I would have known and expected these short comings, but this was my experience.

The blue fastener is very easy to fumble and the male end of the snap will not release from it once the snap is made. It stays stuck in the blue fastener. I ruined 2 items with this.

This product is fairly easy to use, follow instructions, hit with hammer. You just need to make sure not to use to many layers of fabric and to use the correct side of the female snap. Other than that I have found them to be fairly secure and the cheapo blue plastic tool has lasted through over 200 snaps at this point.

This is my favorite snap attacher. I've used it to attach nearly 120 snaps and very seldom did I not like the result. It has worked the best out of the snap attachers that I've tried holds up to quite a bit of hammering.

This a very easy to use tool which makes attaching fasteners a "snap". Use with snap fasteners and you have a quick, easy and versatile method for any item needing closing or attaching. As soon as I bought the tool and the snaps, I found several uses for them that I never would have thought of. It is quicker than sewing and has the added bonus that you can open and close it unlike a sewn seam. I would highly recommend this simple tool. It is a real bargain.
