4.0 out of 5 stars Not GTAVC, but a Fun Driving Game, June 27, 2004
This review is from: Driv3r (Video Game)
Driv3r is an obvious offshoot of the blockbuster hit Grand Theft Auto - Vice City. Unlike Vice City's mythical city, Driv3r uses real life streets of Miami, Nice and Istanbul.

While this is obviously riding on the coattails of Vice City, it would of course be a mistake to want any other game to be exactly LIKE Vice City. Why would you buy it if it was an exact duplicate? Instead, Driv3r has you as Tanner, a FBI agent stationed in Miami, going through its real streets, getting sucked into a conspiracy.

The graphics are really pretty impressive. On one hand, you get a general person-model like in Vice City - reasonably good, not Splinter Cell high quality. The clouds overhead are quite nice, the shadows falling off your car and buildlings are quite impressive.

The car models, as you might expect coming from a car-driving game company, are quite spectacular. They're all "clones of" - no real car licenses here - but they're quite nice. Even better, if a car manages to blow up, the bits that go flying are quite recognizeable as well.

We found the default driving view a bit annoying - it's right "behind" the car so your car ends up blocking the view of what is ahead of you. We'd rather have a high-and-behind view that gives you a better look at what you're driving towards.

There are a few shooting missions and a ton of driving missions, again as you might expect. The cut-scenes and plot are all nice to move the plot along. The voice talent is impressive - Mickey Rourke, Iggy Pop, etc.

The sounds in general are quite well done. The engine sounds, squealing tires, ambient noise, soundtrack, all fit the mood. Again, this company has done driving games for many years. It's what you would expect.

There are definitely a few bugs in this game. We were driving our car in a convoy with other cops to get to a crime scene - and the cop behind us rear-ended us and drove us into a building. There are the usual random clipping problems that you get in games like these. Also, the game really expects most players to have to replay a given mission many times to get the timing down exactly right. If you make one small mistake, you miss your opportunity and lose the mission.

There are fun rewatch-the-cool-part options, making this like an action movie. Many items in your world are destructable, depending on the size of what you are driving. In a small car, you can take out the smaller light poles but not the larger ones. In a large truck, just about anything is game.

If you loved the driving aspects of Vice City, or other racing games in general, then Driv3r is probably a great game for you. In addition to the missions there is free driving options and mini-games to play with.

If, however, you really liked the sneak-around-and-shoot missions, you probably won't like this one. Your money would be better spent on other shooters on the market.

Still, I had great fun with this game, once I accepted that it was very perfectionist-minded and required great driving skill. The more you play, the better you get, the more fun you have!

4.0 out of 5 stars This is actually a very good game, April 13, 2006

This is a very fun game. You can obvisouly tell a lot of time went into it, it's just that it had some flaws that caused people to not buy it, like the fact that people will randomly sometimes fall from the sky, but bugs like that don't happen to often for anyone to care. The music and sound effects in the game are also really good. It is also really fun to just cruise around in free mode and the graphics are pretty impressive. A couple gripes about it is that you cannot shoot while driving the car. Also, it is kind of difficult for a game. Overall though, its a good game that just got overlooked.

This game is really good. I love it. I don't know why ESRB rated it "M". It has no blood, or anything like that. They should really rate it "T" (teen). GTA : Vice city was better, but my mom made me sell it because u can slice people's heads off and blood squirts out of their necks. It's pretty disgusting. Anyways, this is the best game out of the 20 games I have. Don't listen to any other bad reviews that are rated 1 star. Those people need to learn what games are REALLY like when they're good or not. Great game!

5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest driving game since Gran Turismo!, June 23, 2004

This review is from: Driv3r (Video Game)
This game is an amazing game that is definately a must-have for all driving fans. Much better than any game of the GTA series. Definately worth buying for great physics, graphics, and amazing gameplay. And to the only person who didn't give this game five stars, you didn't give it five stars because you can't beat the level, how about you tone down the difficulty and stop making it look like a bad game just because you're not good at it.

Driv3r is the best game I've played since Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Driv3r has an awesome soundtrack and great graphics. The gameplay is amzing with tow basic modes Undercover and Take A Ride. Both modes give you the ultimate gaming expierence. Driv3r is a must for gaming owners. Recommended to All!

(...) I want everybody to know that this is a must-buy! I watched all trailers and it looks so damn good! I wonder what its gonna be like to play...
Third, I want to share some of the features:

-Drive not only cars but also Boats, trucks, go-karts and Motorcycles! Some say there's also a Forklift...
-Great car physics, the most realistic ever!
-Great damage system. You can even shoot actual bulletholes in the car and they wont dissapear!

Just a few more weeks...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good if it was half the price, July 14, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Driv3r (Video Game)
The good things about Driv3r:

The V8 cars sound great
The Cities look great, and are pretty big
The handling is all about power sliding, like the previous series
The graphics are more 'realistic' than it's closest rival, GTA

The bad things about Driv3r:

The cars that aren't big V8s sound like mopeds going downhill

The Cities may be big, but you can't make use of them in the missions, take a short cut during most missions and you will fail. There is so much in each city (football stadiums, parks, skate parks you name it) but none of it is of any use within the game. In 'Take a ride' mode there isn't anything to do apart from shoot the 10 'Timmys', the GTA series rewards players for fooling around, Driv3r just lets you do it for nothing.

The missions have opted for difficulty rather than complexity or quality. The missions are very short, but frequently unfair. Although the game can easily be completed in a day, it will be through gritted teeth as you replay over and over until you finally get a mission to start without some idiot in a van pulling in front of you at the start.

The boats are really lame - they look good, and the view of a sunset as you skim the Miami or Nice coast is good, but the boats don't bob about on the water, even at speed. They ride the water like it was flat glass.

In pursuit missions, even if you manage to overtake the car you are to take out, trying to ram it is pointless as it turns out to be as solid as a wall, and you wont affect it's progress.

The police, even if they were driving battery powered golf carts (they dont, but you know what I mean) can overtake you. Makes me wonder why I shelled out for that Ferrari, a cop car is obviously the ultimate supercar.

All vehicles have a top speed of around '80mph' (revealed by a missions speedometer)and on a straight road you'll be screaming for it to go up at least one more gear.

The control issues - getting in and out of boats & cars, aiming, and jumping are all seriously flawed.

Millions of bugs. Pedestrians fall from the sky (often, believe it or not) you can become trapped in roadside buildings, the kerb often triggers a 'head on' collision, some pillars and posts can be driven through and some are totally indestructible...

Pretty as it is, once you've completed the (short but crushingly unfair at times) missions there is little else to do, little else of any value at least.

Just a bit more care on making the missions fairer, longer, interesting and making more use of the cities - and this would have been a good game in spite of it's other flaws.

Oh, other reviewer (!), it was Ryan O'Neal in The Driver and it's not rare, you can pick up the VHS right here on Amazon :)

Talk about bang for your buck. I'm stilling playing this thing months later.
The awesome crash physics make this better than other gta wannabees. The story is very interesting although there are not that many missions. But still enough for you to enjoy again and again.

I wish this game had more vehicles - there are about 10 in each of the 3 cities. And they are not real licensed vehicles. Also, the police are not that intelligent as they are in GTA.. always the same crashing psychos. And you never get arrested and sent to jail. The game simply ends at that point.

You get to pilot boats too but, unfortunately, no airplanes or helicopters.
