A Fun and Beautiful Ride in the Air and on the Ground,
By Force Marker (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Drive in the Clouds: The Story of the Aerocar (Paperback)
Jake Schultz's "A Drive in the Clouds" is the definitive story of the Aerocar. I happened to meet Jake recently and was blown away by his passion for this fabled car-in-a-plane. Turns out Jake met Molt Taylor, inventor of the Aerocar. Taylor gradually came to know and trust Jake, and Taylor opened his personal archives and memories. That includes priceless photos of the Aerocar being built and test flown. Some of them are in full color which is definitely worth the price of admission!
What's great about this book is the truly "inside" nature of some of the information in it. It's also wonderful to know that thanks to the friendship between Taylor and Schultz, a lot of Aerocar memorabilia has been preserved -- Schultz donated the bulk of what he'd assembled for the book, to Seattle's Museum of Flight.

A Drive in the Clouds,
This review is from: A Drive in the Clouds: The Story of the Aerocar (Paperback)
As publisher of this book and owner one of the five Taylor Aerocars, I can tell you Jake has written a superb book with great insight into a dream so many of us have - to fly in a car! Car and aircraft aficionados will appreciate the tremendous innovations going into making a car that can also fly. Highly recommended!

This is an entertaining and informative book about the post WWII attempt to develop the "everyman's airplane".
The photos are great and the book is a quick read. It's kind of an obscure corner of aviation history and reflective of the mind set after the war that airplanes were destined to be in everyones garage some day. I enjoyed the book throughly and recommend it to aviation and history buffs.

I've been looking for a book about the aerocar for a long time and here's one, and what's more it fills the bill. Packed with information and photos, it illuminates a peculiar piece of automotive/flight history in a clear & straightforward manner.

Having been extremely fortunate to go to lunch with the author of this book, and being the proud owner of a signed copy, I can highly recommend this book to all fans of civilian aviation history. I loaned my copy to a friend who worked with Molt Taylor and actually flew in the aerocar, and he said it was an extremely accruate representation of the Aerocar story.
This is a professionaly done, well written, and well photo documented narration of not just the Aerocar, but of Molt Taylors other creative inventions. You will find this one of the more enjoyable aviation books you have read. Regarding the subject itself, folks still haven't given up on the idea as witnessed by: http://jalopnik.com/5173389/terrafugia-flying-car-makes-first-flight

This is an interesting book, but more attractive to those just wishing to know the basic story. I had hoped for more of the engineering detail, and the problems of flight certification. The book also interleaves single page items among the main chapters which breaks up the flow a bit.
Thus it's a fairly interesting read, but doesn't help the serious researcher much. However, it's a good collection of contemporary photographs, and the flying shots are great. |
