Have to be a Genius to Use It,
This review is from: Drive Genius By Prosoft Engineering Inc (CD-ROM)
I bought this a while ago after having some problems with my Mac and having to bring it in to the shop. I saw on their work order that all they did was run diagnostic software, and I had read good reviews of Drive Genius elsewhere so thought I would give it a try.Big mistake! Although I have been a computer user for many years, and would say that my experience level is intermediate (I can keep my computer running pretty well in most instances, have used Terminal, have installed hardware parts and done other troubleshooting successfully), this software is almost impossible for me to use because the documentation is so poorly written. It comes with a digital user's manual, but I honestly do not understand anything the writers are talking about. I believe you're supposed to re-start your computer and boot from the disk that they supply, but that's never actually made clear for someone with little experience to this kind of thing. And it doesn't explain what all the functions of the software are. They really assume that you already know what you're doing. I have tried running some of the tests, but I'm honestly not sure what some of them mean. I've been having a problem with a hard drive and ran a test on it yesterday, and it gave me some kind of obscure message and said "done" but it didn't fix the problem, and I was left not knowing what to do next. I was at their website a couple of weeks ago and they had an update listed, but it was written in such a manner that I did not understand a thing they were saying. It was not clear to me whether I needed to get a new "boot disk" after the update or not. This company needs a tech writer who understands that not everyone understands all this computer jargon! In short, if you are an experienced computer user with lots of diagnostic and troubleshooting skills already, this product may be okay for you. But if you are an average computer user like me, who occasionally encounters a problem with their drive and would like easy-to-understand software to check and diagnose the hard drive, this software is *not* for you. I prefer to use Apple's own diagnostic utilities or the Tech Tool deluxe CD that you can download if you have a service agreement with them.

I only give it 4 stars because the CDs in the package were blank for some reason. Using my serial number, Prosoft gave me a way to download the image. But I'd expect the product to ship with properly burned discs since the bootable discs are an important part of recovery.

Drive Genius is a must for me because it enables me to create and manage partitions on my iMac hard drive and external backup drives -- without destroying data. I use it mainly to create, delete, move, resize, and defragment partitions. And it's super easy to use.One key benefit: I don't know of a way to resize a partition using Mac Disk Utility (OS X 10.4 - Tiger), without destroying data. Not sure about Leopard. Drive Genius does this flawlessly every time (so far!). Other features of Drive Genius I haven't used, but that look pretty cool: * Duplicate a drive or volume * Repair a corrupt drive or volume * Rebuild drive structure * Fix permissions * Shred a drive (overwrite 3 times with blank data) - essential before selling, donating, or taking a machine in for repair For $99 (or $59 upgrade from previous version) this software is a steal.
