An intriguing and nostalgic history of the Drive-In movie,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Drive-In Movie Memories (DVD)
Drive-In Movie Memories is an informative and entertaining 58-minute documentary of the Drive-In Movie, a popular culture phenomena made possible by the combination of automobiles and the movies as a venue for youthful courting and family entertainment from its debut in the mid-1930's through it's "golden age" of the 1950s & 60s, to its decline with the competing onset of the television era and its diminished but still lingering presence on the American landscape of today. Featuring interviews with Burton Gilliam, Leonard Maltin, Samuel Arkoff, John Bloom, and Barry Corbin, Drive-In Movie Memories is a remarkable production of culturally significant American history. Enhanced with the inclusion of such special features as "About the Producers Awards & Festivals", "About the Director", and Don't Forget to Visit our Concession Stand!", Drive-In Movie Memories is enthusiastically recommended for personal and community library DVD collections as an intriguing and nostalgic history of the Drive-In movie.

I caught this documentary on PBS and happy to see it was available to purchase. This footage and information they have is very interesting and educational. Those of us who are fortunate to remember the drive ins will find this extremely nostalgic and fun. The next generation will find it very educational and probably feel jilted that they did not get to enjoy this great form of entertainment. I love how they show the history of how the drive in started and how this was a place to bring families in its heyday. I also loved how they showed "new advances" in sound systems, some of which were quite funny. It was great to see the "stars" of the drive in at it's heyday interviewed for this documentary, as well as the original movie trailers of drive in classics and as a special treat, there are concession stand ads there were used at the time of the drive in.

After seeing this Documentary over and over again, I bought a projector, an outdoor screen, a popcorn popper,(all new for less than $500), and use an old surround sound for outdoor movie night at home. The kids love it. To get the drive-in sensation I back my truck up towards the screen and drop the tailgate....like I did at the drive-in. I have some of the Drive-in old box speakers but haven't had time to hook them to the system.
I highly recommend this Documentary. The only problem I had with it was sudden bursts of volume on occassion.

What was the most intersting part for me was the history behind the drive ins.
The commercials sprinkled in were nice, but it was the 'behind the scenes' news that I liked...

I enjoyed this DVD very much. I was a part of the drive in movie industry for over 20 years, and enjoyed every minute of it. This DVD was VERY good. It took me back to a much better time.
