Book Description

May 10, 2010
When he was sixteen years old, Larry Miller came home one summer night to find all his possessions sitting in three bags on the porch of his darkened house. The door was locked. From those troubled and humble beginnings rose a man whose influence has touched, according to reliable pollsters, more than 99 percent of the population of Utah as well as myriads of people worldwide. Seven months before Miller passed away, he began working with Doug Robinson on this biography. Written in first person, the book talks about the many facets of Larrys life and legacy and speaks candidly about the people and experiences that influenced him. It doesn t just tell Larry Millers story, it shares lessons painful as well as joyful lessons he has learned from his experiences. This fascinating and inspiring biography includes:A moving foreword by Utah Jazz great John Stockton, An epilogue written by Gail Miller, Larry s wife, Numerous photographs, A firsthand look at the incredible breadth of Larry Miller s work and contributions in business, in sports, in the arts, in his support of the Joseph Smith Papers Project, as well as his personal humanitarian service, A full section addressing the question Larry was most often asked: How did you do it?

Editorial Reviews

Review

[Larrys] impact in athletics through the success and reputation of the Utah Jazz, the Salt Lake Bees and Miller Motorsports Park, can be felt nationwide and perhaps worldwide. Yet, his greatest accomplishments may be the helping hands, the lessons, the time and care he offered to those less fortunate than himself. This [man] ... chose to be a servant king who used his resources and clout to enrich the lives of others. --Hall of Fame point guard John Stockton

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Story of Financial Acheivement May 13, 2010
By Billy D
Format:Hardcover
Doug Robinson wrote an excellent Profile of Larry Miller in 2001 that I really really liked.

This book tells the story of Larry Miller (Owner of the Utah Jazz, and many car dealerships)who started as a parts clerk at a car dealership and rose to become a force in Utah Business.

Larry Miller was literally driven - working double hours for 20 years - This Man and this story is inspiring for anyone who wants to achieve in Business and in life.

The message is - work hard and the breaks will come to you.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to get ahead.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read! August 14, 2010
By Jane

"Driven" was hard to put down. Both my husband and I read it in a short time. Loved all the details that were shared about Larry Miller's life, not just about him being the owner of the Jazz basketball team in Utah. I especially enjoyed the excerpts at the end of each chapter and their insight to Larry Miller. It was great hearing what his wife added to the book - they both seemed very honest. It was interesting to hear how he succeeded in the business world, but also that he sacrificed much because of it. I have recommended this book to everyone I have talked to about it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Larry H Miller's own story. (Owner of Utah Jazz) June 25, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Prior to Larry's death he worked with a journalist to write his life story. It is very well written and gives a private look into his life, both personal and business. Great book. One can learn from his story.
He was a great man.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing man - Excellent book May 21, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
For those who whine about the American Dream being dead, read Driven. At age 27 Miller has his epiphany. He suddenly realized that with a mortgage, a wife and three kids, and a job selling auto parts over the counter, he has nothing to fall back on. He decides to become a world class auto parts salesman. Within a few months he doubles sales. Within a few years he is the sales supervisor over five stores. With hard work and determination in a very ordinary job, he creates within himself the skills and drive that eventually lead him to own his own dealership. As a proven performer and producer, opportunities begin to come his way. Within a few decades he owns many diverse businesses, employs thousands of people, and is worth billions.
It is a wonderful story of how hard work, integrity, determination, and willingness to take risks, can lead to success.
He also candidly talks about how his success was a burden to his family, and how he had to get to know his children later in life, since he missed their childhoods.
I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting August 15, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I recently had the privilege of reading Driven: An Autobiography. Although it is very cliche' to say, I couldn't put it down. This is such a wonderful story of a man and his wife that came from poor beginnings with all the odds against them and yet they not only accomplished the unexpected and unimaginable, but did it for basically unselfish reasons and then gave so much back, especially to the State of Utah. This is a book that makes you ask yourself, "Why didn't I accomplish more?" This is a book that fills you with pride for what Larry and Gail were able to do and for how they live(d) their lives. This is a book that should be required college reading for the purpose of motivating those that do not have direction. This is a book I will never forget.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a great book... June 1, 2010
By BC
Format:Kindle Edition
A fantastic book about a fantastic man. This book features some truly fascinating stories about many of Larry`s buisness deals (most notably his purchase of the Utah Jazz) but what might be even more fascinating is the love story that is told between Larry and his longtime companion, Gail.

Truly a must read.
