John Digweed

"One of Los Angeles’ finest DJ’s"

Product Description

Driven opens on an atmospheric note with an original production by Hiratzka & Kazell entitled 'Venice Dawn.' The spoken word a cappella from Audio Soul Project's 'Community' is layered over this lush instrumental to become a new mantra for electronic dance music. The ethereal melodic elements from 'Venice Dawn' continue on, adding new dimension to Schatrax's 'Mispent Years.' This three-part overlay culminates with the uplifting ethnic vocals and bumping bass of Casa Flava's 'De Moma De.'

From here Kazell shifts into a wicked tribal groove, with the dark mysterious effects and haunting vocals from Jay Tripwire's 'Witches Brew' conjuring up images of the jungle’s heart of darkness. Building into Amani vs Teapot's 'Calling on My Roots,' the mix kicks into the tech house swing of Aquaculture's 'Don’t Play The Game,' then smoothly transitions into Chris Lake's stunning breakbeat remix of Ictus - 'The Look.'

Moving into a slightly deeper vibe, the driving beats of Minilogue's 'Pixelised' lead us into the underwater grooves of Oil & Water's 'Floating on Top.' This exclusive studio edit uses the dubbed out vocals from 'Calling On My Roots' and 'Community,' as well as percussive elements from 'Witches Brew', finally kicking things into high gear with the introduction of the thumping bassline from Bjorn Mandry - 'Time Factor.'

The progressive vibe continues to develop with the upcoming Velocity Records / Black Label release by Hiratzka & Kazell, 'Prime,' and in the final stretch the mix features an amazing mash-up of Madoka's 'Plataforma' and Sasha's 'Artificial Heart.' Here, the arrangement is completely restructured, with the gorgeous pads and melodic bass from Madoka intertwined with the signature vocal and synth elements from Sasha. The two tracks continue to build together, climaxing with the main groove of 'Artificial Heart,' taking the listener to the electrifying peak of this brilliant mix.

5.0 out of 5 stars a master at the decks, January 8, 2004

This review is from: Driven (Audio CD)
i've had the priveledge of seeing kazell a couple of times and i have to say his skillz behind the decks are beyond human comprehension at times... he spun a marathon 5 hour set at the crescent room in ATL for his cd release party and it can be safe to say that he tore the roof off that place. not feeling constrained by a typical genre like so many other djs his genre crossover mixing techniques deserve commendation where so many other djs fail.

while many progressive trance dj's seem to flirt with monotany and boredom it seems to me like kazell's style has evolved lightyears beyond its own time. tribal house, progressive breaks, trance... this guy flips beween these different styles
with the greatest of ease and his mixing is never incongruent no matter where he is taking you. this cd is a fine example of what the right records in the right hands can do. highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much anticipated and much deserved, January 27, 2004
This review is from: Driven (Audio CD)
I met Kevin (Kazell) about three years ago. We exchanged emails for tickets to the Sasha and Digweed night at The Mayan in LA...he was selling tickets at Massivetickets.com. A couple of months later I was at Ra in Vegas and I walked into this club and the funky beats from the club was something I hadn't heard in a long time. The music was off the chains! About an hour later I hear someone call my name and sure enough it was Kazell. I said to him do you believe the set that DJ just played and he told me it was him up there spinning. After that I made sure to show up wherever he was spinning. Being a person who has been into this type of music for over ten years I have put Kevin up in the ranks with the best of them. This CD is a fantastic opener for someone who you will be hearing a lot of for years to come. It is a musical journey of brilliance and it's a great way to put a smile on your face. Starts off ridiculously strong and finishes even stronger. His style is his own and his ablility to mix anything together proves he is the #1 up and coming DJ of today. This CD is a much necessary addition to anyones collection. Good luck Kevin and keep the beats coming!

Doug
