Book Description

March 1, 2000
“Definitely the most comprehensive documentary retrospective on everything relative to the hopped-up internal combustion scene….”
Street Rodder

"Driving Me Wild is an objective survey of Americas love/hate preoccupations with the souped up internal combustion engine and the modified vehicle it goes in. Leah Kerr fully explores the resurgence of fascination with todays auto fetish."
—Robert Williams, artist

"Leah Kerr carries the reader into a parallel universe where the atmospherenitromethane!sustains edgy and sublime sorts of art and ingenuity. There is great reading on every page, and real passion, too, as when Leah decries the greed, commercialism and favoritism that threaten to strangle the soul of car culture".
—Bob Post, author of High Performance: The Culture and Technology of Drag Racing and curator emeritus, Smithsonian Institution

"The best thing about Driving Me Wild is not only is it a great book about Drag Racing, it also includes everything that goes along with it: the music, the movies, the whole experience. No one else puts you right in the drivers seat like Leah does!
—Mike LaVella, editor/publisher Gearhead Magazine

Think flames! Think passion! Think pleasure that quakes your insides as you inhale addictive blasts of nitro, mainlining the hazardous elixir of speed and power! This is not your grandads classic car book.

Hot rods are America's god-given inheritance to freely partake in risky behavior. Meet wrench-twirling, retro-outfitted tattooed babes who rev your pulse! Ogle neuron-twisting surrealistic lowbrow art! Discover the daredevil geniuses who invented drag racing! Heres your introduction to visionary women and minorities and backyard mechanics who carry on the tradition of individuality and, Yes They Will Race For Food!

About the Author

Leah M. Kerr is a freelance writer and photographer for magazines, including African Americans on Wheels, Drag Racing Monthly, Full Throttle, and Gearhead.

She is old enough to remember the early days of punk rock and old enough to get out of the house and see music regularly. Kerr worked in the motion picture entertainment arena for 12 jaded years before finally giving in to the writing muse. Like every "screenwriter" out there, she has a closet full of unproduced scripts - and one produced one. FOR HIRE, written with partner Karen Erbach and starring Rob Lowe and Joe Mantegna, is in video stores near you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nitro-Powered Outlaw Culture is Just the Way I Like It!, April 12, 2000

This review is from: Driving Me Wild: Nitro-powered Outlaw Culture! (Paperback)
My boyfriend gave me this book for my birthday and I can't put it down. It covers all the things I love about going to the races. This book illustrates the excitement of drag racing from people who devote their lives to finding ways to go faster, entertaining a crowd and staying alive all at the same time!

Leah Kerr's book beautifully describes a spectator's (like me) attraction to this sport. She lays out an easily understandable history that credits women like Barbara Hamilton, Della Woods and Paula Murphy (yeah, and the great Shirley Muldowney), for their racing determination. It's nitro-powered!

90% of the battle to win a race is done before the car pulls up to starting line.

Leah M. Kerr definitely went through her checklist before launching her new book, "Driving Me Wild".

Action Photos......check; Drag Racing history.....check; Screaming Cars......check; In-depth Interviews.....check; Numb Fans.....check; Smoking Tires.....check; Creepy Art.....check; Roaring Engines.....check; Funky Cars.....check; Hot Rod Music.....check; Hot Rod Movies.....check.

She's gone through the checklist.

Now all you have to do is line up at the starting line and ...............Punch it!
