Book Description

August 20, 2010
Driving With No Brakes is a fascinating, inspirational book about how two courageous leaders built a remarkable company that can thrive in change and succeed in an unpredictable world. The book offers important lessons for any business leader trying to create value in the 21st century.

In Driving With No Brakes, Alan and Harriet Lewis, owners of Grand Circle Corporation, reflect on the company's successes and failures and highlight important business strategies that have propelled it to be held by many as the world's best travel company. Through the lens of Grand Circle, they demonstrate how they were able to achieve sustained business success amidst the tumultuous and highly competitive travel industry by fostering a values-based organization that embraces risk while maintaining focus on people and social mission.

In 1986, shortly after Alan and Harriet Lewis bought Grand Circle Travel, a competitor remarked that there was no way a bunch of hooligans from Boston could run a worldwide travel business. At the time, Grand Circle was a travel company with one office, $27M in sales, and was losing more than $2 million a year. Twenty-five years later, Grand Circle has grown nearly 20% per year into a highly profitable company with annual sales in excess of $600 million. The company owns or charters 60 ships, operates 80 trips in 100 countries, and employs 2,300 people in more than 30 offices worldwide. With social mission tightly woven into Grand Circle's business strategy, the company has donated or pledged more than $50 million USD to educational, humanitarian, and cultural organizations worldwide since 1992.

Grand Circle is beloved by its customers (American travelers), more than 125,000 of whom travel with Grand Circle Travel and its affiliate, Overseas Adventure Travel, each year. The company has served more than 1.5 million travelers over the years and prospered through more than 300 crises, including the 9-11 attacks, the rise of online competitors, and ongoing global political, economic and environmental challenges. Despite it all, Grand Circle continues to increase its profitability and grow at a rate of nearly 20 percent per year.

It has been a wild ride, and there were times when Alan and Harriet were literally driving with no brakes. This book tells the story of Grand Circle and of a remarkable couple's dream to build a company that would help change people's lives and of the long, hard, and fun-filled journey they took to get there.

Read what our travelers are saying about Driving With No Brakes:

This is the business person's Three Cups of Tea.

Be prepared for a rip-roaring page turner. Alan and Harriet Lewis have written a book that will inspire and surprise the reader. It is full of funny and revealing stories about how and why they built this company into a world-class success. I have been traveling with the company for years and until now had little idea of the impact that they make in the lives of the people in the countries we visit.

After well over a dozen wonderful trips with Grand Circle companies, we finally discovered the secrets that made them so meaningful and informative. The Lewises have the vision and ability to really listen and learn from their associates and travelers, and then change and improve the operation. Their many stories of successes and failures make this an interesting read.

Before I review this book, I must say that I have an immense respect for Alan Lewis and Grand Circle Travel. I worked there for two years and traveled to three different continents on trips that honestly changed my life. I joined GCT because many of the values I already lived and breathed daily and I loved to volunteer and travel. While at GCT, I excelled as one of the top performers and always was ranked highly on the values.

However, the version of GCT portrayed in this book is an exagerated version of GCT. This is what I think Alan would like to imagine GCT to be, but in practice and reality, readers deserve to know that it is a little different. First, workers are not always # 1. Second, employee retention is not as high as the book portrayed it to be.

My experience is that workers were not number 1. For example, GCT purposely hires too many call center workers in one class just so they can fire or lay off poor performers. What's more, there have been many top performing associates that have practiced the values, but have been laid off or fired simply to cut costs. This is a short sited business practice that is not conducive to long term growth.

Financial firings (as I call them) happen even when the company is doing well. Recently, a lot of employees were laid off/fired (including very high performers) and then a new class was re-hired about a month after. None of the top performing associates have been asked back. It is hypocritical to say worker's are number one yet fire your best workers. In reality, the workers are just pawns that can be replaced with a stroke of a pen with other less experienced workers that cost the company less and provide the customer with a poorer quality level of service because they are new to all the policies and procedures.

Also, the retention rate is so poor at GCT. My class had 10 people in it. Two years later only one associate remains. The rest have been fired, laid off or have quite (but mostly fired). What more, the manager has been replaced by a less experienced outside manager and the trainer was laid off. All in the name of associates being #1.

In addition, call center workers and forced to work mandatory overtime and often do not get to partake in company events. If you do not work mandatory overtime, you are seriously reprimanded or fired. In addition, bathroom time is monitored and evaluated.

Despite my grievences, I do respect GCT. It is a fantastic company. They do volunteer, they do give back to world charities, Haiti, schools, and more. I just wanted to practice a little open and courageous communication for old time sakes and let the readers know that they need to read this with a grain of salt.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Well Thought-Out Company September 3, 2010
Format:Paperback
Driving With No Brakes is somewhat of a misleading title, because Grand Circle is a very well thought-out company. The company's unconventional attitude has served it very well, not just financially, but more importantly, in immersing its loyal travelers in different cultures and helping to change people's lives. If more successful companies practiced giving back to the local and global communities, imagine the impact they could make on the health, education, and well-being of the world's people. I'm sure they would also realize that they could do very well by doing good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Driving to perfection August 30, 2010
Format:Paperback
This book is a must read for those who love travel and those who wonder how a new company can become successful. This is not a puff piece written to glorify someone's boss, but a real roadmap of a top travel company created from a vision of not profit, but of service. They created a company based upon what they would wish a travel company to be, honest value and more than "this is another castle etc." but "this is how my people live and this is my home". That requires native guides with excellent English skills as well as excellent people skills, and folks on the ground who can devise itineraries and lodgings and meals that get an American really in touch with the country and people. They learned from their mistakes (which are described and admitted - unusual) and brought a vision of doing good in these countries through a foundation which they developed (to which the part of the cost of each trip is added). They share also their vision of what a company should be, where every person can help make the organization better without fear.

Those who are interested in creating a successful business of any kind should consider this a "must read". The practical lessons learned and the vision can be applied to any endeavor, not just travel. I wish that I worked for a company like theirs.

There are pictures and quotes added throughout the book that make the picture they paint much more personal and interesting. This is a book well worth reading and thinking about once finished. I am still doing so.
