Product Description

Transporter Sync Private Cloud by Connected Data
Transporter Sync Private Cloud by Connected Data

Gone are the days of files scattered across your computers and digital devices, say goodbye to moving data around, deleting files to free up space, or searching through thumb drives. Transporter Sync changes the way you store, access and protect your photos, music, videos and documents by allowing your digital devices to work together as one device.

Everything You Need, Instantly Available Wherever You Are

With Transporter Sync, you can take a video on your phone and instantly watch it on your tablet or computer, or share it with your family without having to send it. Create a presentation on your work computer, edit it on your home computer, and present it on your tablet without having to move or copy anything. Simply plug in any USB external drive and Transporter Sync makes everything you need instantly available everywhere you are from all your devices. Welcome to the future.

What's in the Box

Transporter Sync, Ethernet cable, AC power adapter and Installation Guide. USB drive sold separately. Compatibility: Mac OS X 10.7+, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8 32 and 64 bit, Apple iOS 5.1 and higher and Android 4.0 and higher.

Automatically Sync Files Between All Your Digital Devices

Transporter makes it easy to keep files organized across all of your devices by automatically syncing your document, photo, music, and video folders. You also have an option to sync only the content you want on a particular device, making it ideal for adding capacity to your laptops, phones, and tablets.

Privately Share Anything, with Everyone You Want

One Transporter makes sharing easy. Even better, share with other Transporter users and everyone has a fast, local copy. This means no more waiting for downloads from the cloud. And with support for up to 4 Terabytes per Transporter, you can easily share and access thousands of hours of HD videos and millions of photos.

Add Terabytes of Capacity to Your Mobile Device with No Monthly Fees

Now you can instantly add terabytes of capacity to your mobile devices. That means no more deleting photos, movies, or TV shows to keep from running out of space. With the free Transporter mobile app, you can upload all of your photos, music, videos and documents, so that you never have to see the dreaded "out of storage" message again.

Transporters are Smart and Talk to One Another

Transporter offers the easiest way to protect what matters most to you. A full copy of your files is kept on your Transporter, and changes are automatically synced in real-time between devices. Add a Transporter in another location and a second copy of your files are kept safe offsite to protect against fire, flood, or theft.

Access Everything You Want, Right When You Need It

Whether you want to download movies while on vacation or access documents on a business trip, Transporter gives you easy access to your files, from all your devices, regardless of where you are. Everything stored on your Transporter - regardless of size or type - is easily accessible using the free desktop, iPhone or Android smartphone apps.

Your Own, Unlimited Private Dropbox with No Recurring Fees

Dropbox is convenient for syncing or sharing a few files, but is just too expensive for everything. Transporter offers all the convenience of Dropbox in a private device, with no monthly fees. This means no more juggling multiple cloud accounts to save money, or decisions about how to manage everything. With Transporter you can sync, share, protect and own it all.

If that drive should fail the data on it will be lost.

The ONLY reason I'm giving this two stars instead of one or zero is because I badly want this product to succeed.
This was while there was no file access or syncing occuring between any devices.

And most definitely not ready for business/production use. Barely ready for home/consumer use.

Everyone buying this or considering buying this needs to understand that it is very much a beta product. This company has clearly not placed the proper funding and resources into developing quality software and QA testing it.
My observations are as follows:

a) You better have your data backed up on another drive because in my experience, your data might randomly disappear with no explanation or option to recover. Yes, it's that unstable.

b) The user interface of both the desktop software, web "management" interface and the mobile apps are nothing short of a design nightmare. Ugly and barely functional.

c) iOS app provides bare bones basic functionality. You can traverse your file system and view files and that's it.
No ability to move or copy files.
No option for a security PIN upon opening of the app.
No option to upload pictures to a specific folder. It just dumps them into the root.
It's ugly as sin.
Very buggy - the app constantly freezes, requiring that it be completely closed out and restarted.

d) Web UI provides no access to your files. Simply the ability to view and monitor your devices statistics, but no web access like Dropbox (which they like to compare themselves to) or Box.com, etc. It is, for the most part, a very ugly and useless web interface which you will rarely use post the initial setup of the device.

e) The desktop app provides a folder on your local drive that syncs with the device. Very similar to public cloud based systems like Dropbox or Sync. The difference is, it is buggy and doesn't work as well as those two.

Yes, it does what it says it does. It syncs automatically, There are no fees, It's 100% Private, You can access it anywhere, You're always protected and you have unlimited sharing.

That being said, here is what I don't like about it.

1. You can't just plug a hard drive full of stuff into it and share it. If you plug in a hard drive, it automatically formats it and then sets it up for use, which means the hard drive can then only be used with this device. It will ERASE anything that was already on the drive, so be aware of that!

2. You need software to make it work. The software does NOT work with windows 98, XP, or VISTA, so forget it if you have those OS systems. You need Windows 7 or 8. (or apple OS)

3. You have to create specific folders that can be shared. You can't just pick a folder and make it sharable. So now you are creating all kinds of new folders and copying stuff into them to share, which eats up a ton of hard drive space. You can't access the drive connected to the device directly. You have to have specific folders that will sync with the connected hard drive. So now you are buying tons of hard drive space for both the computer and the sync drive on the device. So let's say you wanted to have 2 TBs of stuff to share....you need two extra TBs on your computer to make sharable folders with and also the 2TB external drive for the device to sync with.

4. If you want to share one file with somebody, you can get a link to it like dropbox does and send the link to your friends. HOWEVER, if you want to share an entire folder with your friends, they have to download software first to have access to it. I have no idea how compatible that software is with older windows formats.

Purchased this looking to cut back on the roughly $200 in annual fees I'm paying to Dropbox, Google Drive and Microsoft for OneDrive/Skydrive. Sounded very promising and the refurbished units were a 1/3 off the new price. I had a spare USB 2TB drive laying around so using the Sync version vs. the one needing an internal notebook 2.5" drive made sense.

Updated 4/4/14:
I had an initial problem with claiming my refurb unit as it was still associated with the prior owner. That cause some concerns as a few of the other reviews complained about poor customer service. However, my experience with the Connected Data/Drobo customer support was nothing short of stellar (thank you Jim and Mark and the rest of you) - they responded promptly and within a day I was able to use the Transporter Sync. I have no idea what happened with other people getting support but this was better customer service than I've gotten from any other tech vendor, especially in the storage market and for such a low priced item.

As to why there was a problem that is on the company that prepped the unit for resale - not Drobo or Amazon. They should have cleared the SN/MAC address from the Transport registry before reselling it. I do understand why the Transporter people need to be careful about giving out ownership over Transporers that might be serving up someone elses files and I appreciate that they are being careful. I was told that the process usually takes a couple of days as they attempt to contact the former (registered) owner to let them know they are unclaiming the device from them.

The Transporter Sync is syncing itself right now. The desktop software installed smoothly on all of my Windows 7 x64 and Mac OSX 10.9 systems. I'll update this review if I have any problems using it.

JDB - Sorry about your experience and we'll be happy to help out. If you can send your support case number to marketing@drobo.com, we'll help get this resolved. The unclaim process is there to safeguard Transporters owners and their data against theft, so it is important to verify that the unit has been unclaimed by the previous owner if you are planning to buy a used unit.
