Product Description

Product Description

This new Observer Window Feeder brings the birds to your window without any obscuring plastic in between. With an ample capacity, sleek lines and a tapered overhanging roof to deflect the weather, it's the best value in window feeders on the market. Attach it securely to your window using the three suction cups. 7" x 3" x 2" dish x 7" tall, 2 cup capacity

From the Manufacturer

The Droll Yankees Observer window bird feeder is made of clear plastic, so you can actually watch the birds as they stroll up to your avian-size dining table. The feeder holds up to 2 cups of seed, and features sleek lines and a tapered overhanging roof that deflects the weather. Unlike tree-hanging feeders, this unit attaches securely to the outside of a kitchen or living room window with three suction cups. It measures 7 by 3 by 7 inches (W x D x H), includes a 2-inch feeding dish, and carries a lifetime warranty.

The chickadees discovered the feeder 10 minutes after it was put up. Even a northern red-shafted flicker gave it a try and looked pretty silly in the bargain (the feeder is perfect for finch sized birds).
Safe from squirrels and directly in view (if you sit still for a few minutes, the birds will use it right in front of your face), this is the best feeder I've ever had.
NB: if you put up this type of feeder, you should also (should anyway) put up bird silhouettes in the windows. This will prevent birds from flying into your windows and injuring or even killing themselves.

I have had many bird feeders, but until this one they were all the type that you hang from a tree. I try to feed birds/squirrels near various windows as entertainment for my indoor cats. They love watching all the critters and "hunting" them through the windows and I enjoy watching them all.

Here in TX the heat and sun wear out plastic feeders pretty quickly so I've never had one last a year without something breaking. This is my 2nd feeder from this company and though this one has yet to break, I am not worried because Droll Yankee's customer service is awesome. The Droll Yankee packaging claims a lifetime warranty, but I've seen that with other companies and found it was much more challenging to get the replacement than it was worth. I had an excellent experience getting a replacement part for my other Droll Yankee feeder so this company has won a customer for life with me! You can read about my experience in detail via my review of the other Droll Yankee feeder (though the W1 Winner is more expensive than this one) - Droll Yankees W1 Winner Window Feeder

I was concerned that the suction cups wouldn't hold and I'd be picking the feeder up off the ground multiple times a day, but even with big squirrels leaping on it from the fence, it only falls once every 1-2 weeks, which is great.

If you don't want squirrels to get to this feeder, simply make sure there's no fence or anything they can easily leap to the feeder from and be sure it's not close to the screen or they will climb the screen (I have to get a new screen because of this) and then climb to the feeder from the screen.

Not knowing which window feeder would be the best, I decided to purchase three types offered on Amazon. I added a picture to the item of the three on my window. (I apologize for the dark image. I was trying to keep from scaring the birds away.)

#1 The Aspects Window Cafe was my favorite (C in the picture)
Aspects Window Cafe Hopper

- most popular with the birds
- easy to fill
- most durable when it falls from the window (darn squirrels!)
- the feeder can be removed for cleaning while leaving the suction cups on window
(I like that so it will maintain a better hold on the window.)
- easy to remove the hulls left behind
- unfortunately the most expensive of the 3

#2 The Droll Yankees Window Feeder comes in 2nd place (B in the picture)
Droll Yankees OWF Observer Window Bird Feeder

- second favorite of the birds
- it can fit a few at a time which was nice
- not as easy to fill
- entire feeder needs to be taken off of the window for cleaning
- difficult to remove the hulls left behind

#3 Birdscapes Clear Window Feeder (A in the picture)
Birdscapes Clear Window Feeder 348

- not popular with the birds.

I have had this feeder up for a week now and the birds love it! I was concerned that the bigger birds would not be able to use it because it looked smaller than I thought it would be but even the Blue Jays come to eat...granted it's a bit harder for these big birds but they still manage. I have had Northern Cardinals, Tufted Titmice, Carolina Chickadees, House Finches and Goldfinches come to the feeder. It also attracts squirrels and they manage to spring into the air and get their little hands in it and hang on but I don't really mind because, well, hey....Squirrels need to eat too, right? This feeder even holds up to the raccoon that comes to raid it at night time. Never once has it fallen down and I don't expect it to.

I have had no trouble with birds flying into my window killing themselves and the birds found it immediately after I put it up. Probably helps that I put Sunflower hearts in it as feed. I didn't want any seed shells cluttering up my deck. It has become so popular with titmice that I go out and sit in a chair next to the feeder and sit very still and the Titmice will come within inches of me.

Love this feeder and it was a great price!
