Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

The winning and winsome Lifetime Television series Drop Dead Diva takes a great concept and then lets its terrific writers and actors run with it. Drop Dead Diva is based on a body-soul switcheroo that happens when a vapid model, Deb (Brooke D'Orsay), dies in a sudden car accident and comes back--accidentally--in the body of an overweight, overachieving attorney named Jane (the absolutely stellar Brooke Elliott). Elliott makes Deb-in-Jane's body a hilarious contradiction and compelling heroine, with Deb's and Jane's flaws combined into one opinionated, extremely entitled package. Drop Dead Diva is reminiscent of classic "switched" films like All of Me and Freaky Friday, with a little of The Truth About Cats and Dogs mixed in. Yet it is easily sustained as a TV series by the deft writing and excellent acting by Elliott, as well as the ensemble cast that includes Margaret Cho (never better), Jackson Hurst, April Bowlby, and Josh Stamberg. The show's setting in a law office ensures no shortage of great situations for comedy, drama, and pathos, yet the acting, writing, and direction are so light and assured that Drop Dead Diva really blazes its own trail. Elliott is a wonder, managing to capture shallow ("I have never been more than a size 2 and I don't intend to start now," says the newly revived, and horrified, Jane/Deb as her first words after recovering from what appeared to be a fatal gunshot wound) and quietly competent. (Happily, Jane retains her brilliant legal mind as well as her body; Deb contributes only her self-involved personality.) Drop Dead Diva easily could veer into preachiness or predictability yet snappily avoids both pitfalls, with sharply drawn and -acted characters that viewers want to follow over the story arcs. And Elliott is a skyrocket of a star, hilarious, heartbreaking, and believable, both as the meek, too-smart-for-her-own-good Jane and the Queen of Everything Deb. No wonder Drop Dead Diva is one of the Lifetime network's biggest breakout successes. The set includes all 13 episodes plus great extras for real fans, including deleted scenes, Ally McBeal-esque "dreamisodes," a making-of feature, and more. Long live the Diva! --A.T. Hurley

Product Description

Life can really throw you curves — especially in this breakthrough Lifetime TV comedy! After beautiful-but-vapid model wannabe Deb (Brooke D’Orsay) has a fatal car accident, she finds herself in the body of the recently deceased Jane Bingum (Brooke Elliott), a brilliant plus-size attorney. By a twist of fate and a bolt of divine intervention, Deb can no longer rely on her fabulous looks to pull her through. Now, the new Jane must confront the challenges of her adventurous new life, love, and career — as well as her curvier frame — in the ultimate showdown of brains and beauty. Featuring a host of celebrity guest stars including Kathy Najimy, Delta Burke, Rosie O’Donnell, Paula Abdul, Liza Minelli and Tim Gunn.

I love this show and hope it comes back for a second season. The premise will be familiar to readers of paranormal romances--a woman dies unexpectedly and comes back in another form that gives her a new perspective on life, society, romance, and, ultimately, her own self.

In this case, the diva that drops dead is a shallow, self-absorbed, not all that bright, but not mean, hot blond with a hot lawyer fiance. Refusing to accept death, she defiantly presses a "return" button while being processed in the afterlife, and whammo, she's back on earth, resuscitated in the body of a very smart, but very chubby brunette lawyer ( looks reminiscent of Delta Burke, but less kittenish).

And off we go. Deb, the dead diva, has to adapt to a new reality as Lane-Bryant-clad plus-size plain Jane. She has her own personality with Jane's brain--so she has a boatload of legal know-how. And, oh oh, her fiance is now a lawyer at Jane's firm. Another female lawyer--one with a slim physique and icy demeanor and high-level ambition that contrasts with Janes's plumpness and subdued prettiness and bit of Deb-ditziness. They sometimes clash, sometimes cooperate, and they are each refining the other, which is cool to watch. Everyone is fated to learn and grow.

The humor and drama are well-balanced, and it's fun to see Margaret Cho as the deadpanning snarky but capable assistant to Jane. The actor who plays Deb's fiance is very appealing and quite handsome (reminds me of the late Edward Albert when he was young with a dash of that guy who was Quentin in DARK SHADOWS, for those who remember).

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't believe it's such a great show! February 18, 2010

Format:DVD
The premise is that a brainless, model, Deb, accidentally dies, presses a button and is accidentally sent back to earth. Unfortunately, she's sent back in the body of an overweight lawyer, Jane, who was a good person (I know a lawyer that was a good person).

The main actress, Brooke Elliott does a great job playing a woman who still sees herself as a model living in a world that perceives her as overweight lawyer; seeing her character evolve from a self indulgent model into someone building a conscious is entertaining. She is forced into ethical dilemmas weekly that are funny, sad, or sometimes touching. There are also plenty of "big name" special guest stars playing some really funny characters.

Truthfully, with the plot I'm surprised this isn't just another fluff show but it isn't. This show leaves you feeling good about the world, hopeful; I don't know how but it does.

I guess I should add that the first couple of shows aren't as good as the later shows but they lay the ground work, so you should watch them knowing that the show turns into something special quickly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Drop Dead Funny June 1, 2010
Format:DVD
There aren't a lot of shows I can watch with both my elderly mom and my teenage kids -- but this is definitely one of them. It's got it all -- heart, laughs, romance and a very upbeat message. I've seen all the episodes on TV but I highly recommend this boxed set.

5.0 out of 5 stars I didn't think I would like this.... But I love it! February 25, 2011

I couldn't sleep one night so I was browsing Netflix and of course there was nothing good... but this show came up in the recommendations so I decided to watch an episode.. Well, I watched the entire 1st season that night and well into the morning... I did not go to sleep lol I was in love. It is a funny show but it really has a lot of meaning in each episode. It is not all about drama and fashion like I thought it was going to be, it's about a lot more. I like the characters and they have a good connection with each other. I have been recomending this show to friends all week. :)

This is by far the best show I have ever seen on TV. It is witty, funny and emotional! The cast of characters bring different flavors to the pot but it all blends together VERY well. Written, directed and acted exceptionally well. Hope to see more seasons of this show! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE IT! July 21, 2010
Format:DVD
This is one of those series that is sweet and funny, with a very talented cast. If that's your thing, then you'll enjoy drop dead diva. I'm not a person with a lot of leisure time to follow series. This is a series that I make a point to chase. The leading lady is an amazing actress with a beautiful voice. I watch it b/c I care about the characters, and would like to see what happens to them. Also, the stories in court range from smart to touching. I say give it a shot. Watch the first two episodes, and by then, you'll know whether you like it or not. If you don't, then you lost less than two hours, but if you do, then you'll be in for a treat! PS: New York Times wrote an article about the show last year for those interested.
