The human drops (time travelers recruited by Lighthouse) are fitted with a time trekker device. This device allows the drop to be under constant surveillance of the Lighthouse tracker. Drops are able to move along the Lighthouse Preferred Timeline (LPT) due to an enhanced DNA plus their medications for strength and youth. The drops and trackers both take medication causing a "robotic" response to emotional stimuli and preventing emotional attachment. What happens if the drops or the trackers fail to take the medication is part of the story.
Darius is a Persian mercenary "drop" from the Crusades and William is a Knight of the Crusades "drop." Both were recruited at the same time, and both have been working for Lighthouse for 1,000 years without much rest or relaxation. Both men physically appear to be 32-33 years old.
Nicolette Stone is the tracker assigned to Darius, and Petra is the tracker assigned to William in the year 2010. Both women are slightly more than a quarter century old. Both trackers face unusual circumstances with their "drops".
Nicolette, Sam, Brynna and Hunter were all in the Lighthouse orphanage together and one or two should have remained minor or nonexisting. What happened to Nicolette's parents remains a mystery. Director Lilly Frank, a regular human in a position of power, has a hinted history with Darius but she never is given any depth to help the reader understand why she is willing to help Darius.

This is clearly not a traditional romance and has you guessing as to what is going to happen in the next installment.
