5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Novel With Lots of Action, November 17, 2008

This review is from: The Drop-Off (Hardcover)
Had never heard of this author before picking up this novel but the blurb looked interesting and the book was just that! The cover does go on a bit about being like a Quentin Tarantino film but it's not really, sure there's a bit of killing but even though various characters suffer violence, you don't read the graphic details like you would see happening in a Tarantino film. The book is albeit a little bit unrealistic but that just makes the storyline more fun, and it is after all a work of fiction. If you want a book where you get to read characters you don't like getting their comeuppance, than this is the novel for you.

Basic plot is one of two men on the run for being in possession of $2.5 million dollar of stolen New York mob dollars' location is finally revealed as he books in with a Floridian plastic surgeon to have an identifying scar removed form his face. That man is hitman Denny Cruz who fears he may have some sort of killers block and wonders if he'll be able to do it ever again which is why instead of killing Smoke Dugan, the thief and murderer of the mob boss then returning their money, Cruz decided to split it with him, and hang out on the run with him with a couple of beautiful and very interesting girls they have met. Luckily for these boys the girls come to the rescue when they see the drugged up Cruz in mob custody. Barely escaping with their lives the group of four head out into the open ocean but their bulletin ridden boat is badly damaged so they've got to find a remote island to hide out in while the boat's engines are repaired.

Unfortunately for them, a friend of a past victim of Cruz who is also on holiday from a stint in the US army in Iraq is on holiday there, throw in a dumb local thief who wants one of the women, a 12 year old pimp, as well as the mob still in hot pursuit and you've got a really fun action filled read!

5.0 out of 5 stars the sequel to Smoked, March 12, 2011
I had read this author's book Smoked, and enjoyed it. This is the sequel to Smoked, in which the main characters from that book make off with $2.5 million in cash, with the mob hot on their trail. They escape by boat, first to Florida, and then wind up on a Caribbean island. Soon, they're mixed up with a mercenary just back from Iraq, a 12 year-old pimp, various lowlifes, and two psychotic hitmen sent to collect the money. I am enjoying all of Quinlan's books (I also read THE FALLING MAN and THE HIT), and think you will, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Caribbean Sun + Lots of Fun, February 21, 2011
This book is the sequel to Smoked. The character from that book are all still here (except for the memorably scary villain Moss, who died at the end of Smoked). This time Smoke Dugan, Lola Bell, her friend Pamela, and Pamela's new boyfriend - the former hitman Cruz - are aboard a stolen yacht and on the run from the mob. Hiding out first in Florida, they narrowly escape a shootout at a marina in Fort Lauderdale, and just make it to the Caribbean island of Saint Mark's before they're boat -shot full of holes -finally conks out.

While they wait for Smoke to finally figure out to fix the boat, the mobsters locate them there. Hilarity ensues. Fist fights, gun fights, murders, torture, attempted rape and various explosions take place on the island, as the heroes from Smoked deal with sadistic mob hitmen, island thugs, a soldier for hire just back from Iraq, and a 12-year-old local pimp.

The book is basically bizarre characters and non-stop action, punctuated by funny dialogue and unexpected twists and turns. I'm liking Quinlan's books a lot, and this one is no exception.
