Hip Hop Wisdom - a great book!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Droppin' Science: Straight-Up Talk from Hip Hop's Greatest Voices (Paperback)
For anyone who thinks Hip Hop is synonymous with Rap, this book will set you straight. For those who think Hip Hop (especially Rap) is always negative and too infused with attitude, this book will give you hope. For the multitude who are fully immersed in this genre of music, this book is nothing short of inspirational. These people have a lot to say and this book shows that what they have to say can help all of us live better lives. Hooray for Ms McIver for putting this wonderful compendium of hip hop wisdom out there! It's also a fun read!

The real deal from hip-hop royalty!,

This review is from: Droppin' Science: Straight-Up Talk from Hip Hop's Greatest Voices (Paperback)
Droppin' Science is the best compilation of zen wisdom from the 'hood I've ever read. For anyone who thinks all hip-hop artists are merely about bling-bling or bang-bang, think again. McIver seems to have amassed all the top names in rap and hip-hop giving advice on everything, life, love, respect, success... you name it! What this book really makes clear, is that it doesn't matter who you are or where you came from, we all basically want the same things in life -- a chance to pursue the American dream, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I'm definitely buying copies of this book for all my young nephews and nieces to read. I'm betting it will open their eyes and inspire them to even greater heights!

New Age Objectivity,

This review is from: Droppin' Science: Straight-Up Talk from Hip Hop's Greatest Voices (Paperback)
Out of the mouths of Hip Hop artists come intellectual quotes that make you wonder did they actually say that. Dropping' Science: Straight-Up Talk from Hip Hop's Greatest Voices edited by Denise L. McIver makes you drop your mouth and take a second look. Straight up talk is an understatement of what you will read in Ms. McIver's book. She quotes various Hip Hop artists on every phase of life. From self-esteem, truth, passion, power & respect, and love & sex, to staying on the right path. You will truly be amazed at the rationale of our top Hip Hop performers. Although there are some quotes which made me want to scream or jump in their faces to say, "oh no you didn't say that," and some that had me smiling and thinking she/he is really deep. Dropping Science demonstrates how everyone looks at society and life differently. Ms. McIver takes you through various topics highlighting the performer's perception of life. Many of them have successfully carved out a niche making them rich and highly respected among the younger generation. Several of their quotes reflect on their upbringing, support from family and friends, the struggles, and doing things that were not morally correct. Their honesty is truly reflected and appreciated. After reading the book, my first thoughts were "why don't they reflect that in their music sometimes?" But who is to say they are not reflecting those same sentiments through song and music. It's time for the older generation to take a moment and really listen to their words, myself included. The Hip Hop culture has truly come full circle and I have to applaud Ms. McIver for opening the door through her book for the misunderstood to finally be more objective to understand this rising culture. You enjoy their music, yet you don't really know what goes on in their minds. Well take a moment and read Droppin Science because it's definitely a great educational guide allowing you to see the other side of artists such as Mary J. Blige, LL Cool J, Will Smith, Bow-Bow, and Ja-Rule just to name a few. They along with the other artists will have you thinking and looking at society issues from a different perspective. The book is unique, colorful, informative, yet original, and definitely an eye-opener. You will truly enjoy. Reviewed by Kalaani

Dropping Science is a pithy collection of quotes from a wide variety of hip hop figures, past and present. It's a great book for flipping through, so get it if you are looking to add some flavor to your coffeetable. It won't get much use on your bookshelf.
