Editorial Reviews

After a series of 12'''s containing highly-touted remixes from Battles 2011 album Gloss Drop, Warp proudly presents all eleven re-works, available for the first time in one place--Dross Glop. Remixers include a who's who of iconic music production from around the globe--from Scotland's Hudson Mohawke to Seattle's Shabazz Palaces. From one of the original UK bass music pioneers--Kode9, to noise pop's darling producer Brian Degraw (Gang Gang Dance). Each track from the critically acclaimed 2011 album sees a stunning re-work here, from dance-floor ready bangers to ethereal minimalism--a tough task with a sound as iconic as Battles, but a truly successful endeavor.

After hearing the original record 'Gloss Drop', I was immediately enthusiastic about the peculiar sound of the Battles. Their songs possess a truly captivating structure of layers, catchy beats and styles that don't make it possible for me to put the album aside. That said, I was obviously curious about the present album of remakes by various artist, 'Dross Glop'.

Though several tracks echo the recognizable sound of the original record, this album is generally something different. Minimalist layers and urban sounds now dominate the album. Especially the second track (Sweetie & Shag), redone by Swedish minimalist The Field, has evolved into a completely new song. Generally I like this album, as I like many of the remixing artists as well, but keep in mind that it's not so much the experimental rock of the original anymore.
Finally, the artwork is again fascinating and of course fits well with the original 'pinkish' record.

I enjoy Battles's music, but this collection of remixes is uninspired and repetitive. If you are a Battles fan already I would not recommend it, ind if you are curious about Battles, definitely check out 'Mirrored' instead.

Most of these remixes are uninspired numbers that you would hear at a trendy bar in Nashville. If you want a cd to keep on your passenger seat so your date has to move it and look at the awesome cover, buy this album.
