5.0 out of 5 stars Matt Gold is perfection personified! February 9, 2013
By Trock
Format:MP3 Music
I discovered Matt Gold after reading an interview with him-I was inspired to check out his music, partly because he seemed lovely and partly because he was compared to Tori Amos, who both my husband and myself are big fans of.
I am absolutely addicted to this album-so much so that I have bought the CD as well as downloading the album. The combination of Matt's soulful voice and skilful, instinctive piano playing are perfectly in tune and his songs resonate and linger long after they have been turned off-until I have to listen again. Every song adds something to to party-"Ordinary" is a feel good love song, and I can really believe that Matt is smiling as he sings because I certainly am. "Cowboy"and "Mr Cannonball" are simply fabulously dancy tracks which will have you singing not always blissful along and smiling at the lyrics! "Oh Joe" was catchy and memorable, describing to me a grown up relationship, filled with warmth and respect even through disagreements and compromise. "Drown Before You Swim", the title track comes straight from the heart of someone you suspect has not always found life easy but still exudes hope and a spirit of resolution as does "Recovering".
"Void" is probably the song which affected me most-the despair, longing and heartbreak speaking directly to me, even through a very different situation the sense of loss seemed tangible and very, very real. Absolutely beautiful.
If you have got this far you can rightly assume that I have fallen deeply in love with the music of Matt Gold and am truly at a loss to know why this man is not world famous. I would probably go as far to say that "Drown Before You Swim" has overtaken Tori Amos' "Little Earthquakes" as my favourite album of all time. Buy this album, you will not regret it.

MATT GOLD. Drown Before You Swim. Ten-song double CD-EP by gay singer/songerwiter Gold, with lyrics more thematically varied than that would imply. Excellent timeless pop arrangements. He sometimes phrases a bit like Donovan, but with a solid voice. The songs are very catchy. They don't have the depth of the lyrics of early gay singer-songwriter Steve Grossman ("Caravan Tonight," LP, Mercury) but few do; Grossman makes one think of Laura Nyro. Could Matt Gold be the modern lovechild of Buzzy Linhart and Ferron? Not one bum track on this (admittedly short) album. Matt Gold Music, no catalog number.

Love his voice like his lyrics. Been telling my friends about him. Hope he makes more music to buy. Ordinary is probably my favorite on the album.!

5.0 out of 5 stars Be careful.... those tunes are catchy January 18, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
You know those songs that enter your mind and end up staying for awhile? That has happened with several of the songs from this album. The album has a nice mix of styles so you don't feel like you are listening to the same melody over and over. While not all of the songs caught my attention right away, I immediately fell in love with VOID and RECOVERING. I happen to love the style and the way they tell a story. Matt's voice is wonderful on the ears and the piano just cradles the songs perfectly. What I wasn't expecting though were those songs that didn't catch my attention at first to grow on me as quickly as they did. For example, Mr. Cannonball has a little zip to it which just makes you want to start snapping your fingers. Ha Ha. Love it!It has some spank (and some amusing lyrics) which took me off guard originally, but has quickly become another favorite of mine.
