“I personally witnessed this fascinating backstory between two of my best friends, Peter Drucker and Bob Buford. Now everyone can benefit from the amazing conversations Bob had with one of the brightest minds of all time.”
—DR. RICK WARREN
Founding Pastor of Saddleback Church and author of The Purpose Driven Life

—BILL HYBELS, Founding Pastor of Willow Creek Community Church

“Only Bob Buford could capture the essence of Peter Drucker in such a moving and authentic way, for who was as close to Peter as Bob Buford? Bob’s book is pure Peter.”
—FRANCES HESSELBEIN
President and CEO of the Frances Hesselbein Leadership Institute (Originally the Peter F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management)

“In addition to being a terrific read, Drucker & Me provides an intimate portrait of Peter Drucker as we’ve never seen him before: as a close friend and mentor. In this way, it reveals not only important organizational lessons but also wonderful life lessons. There are lots of Drucker books out there at this point, but this one is a true standout.”
—RICK WARTZMAN
Executive Director of the Drucker Institute and Columnist for Time.com

“A remarkable friendship is revealed in a compelling, inspirational, and challenging way, and the reader becomes part of this special relationship.”
—STEVE REINEMUND
Dean of Wake Forest School of Business and Retired Chairman and CEO of PepsiCo

“A mentor is a person who multiplies his or her impact by investing in the lives and work of others. Peter Drucker was such a mentor to Bob Buford and then Bob became a mentor to countless others. This is the heartwarming story of how two men changed each others’ lives and then leveraged that transformation to meet ‘human needs and alleviate suffering’ through a chain reaction that is still changing our world.”
—RICHARD STEARNS
President of World Vision US and Author of The Hole in Our Gospel and Unfinished

Drucker & Me is absolutely outstanding. I read it once, took notes, and have returned twice again. I am delighted to be able to publicly recognize Bob and this fine work. This little book punches well above its weight! Imbued with wisdom, it is a powerful story of profound collaboration and inspired leadership, teaching us all how to lead more useful lives in service of others.”
—TOM TIERNEY
Chairman and Cofounder of the Bridgespan Group

“I did not know Peter Drucker personally yet have admired his work from a distance since as far as I can remember. Drucker & Me provides a perspective on this important man that few would have of any man—one that even further enhances our collective view of his incredible contributions to our work here. I am grateful for Bob’s effort in sharing this with all of us.”
—CURT PULLEN

Drucker & Me is a wonderful example of what mentoring is supposed to be. The story is a warm relationship between mentor and his pupil. It is a model for anyone who is in a mentoring relationship and demonstrates how both people benefit from it. I felt I was part of the conversation. A bonus was the wisdom that Peter Drucker imparted that is valuable to all of us. It is worth rereading regularly. One of the best books I have read in recent years.”

Until now, few people have realized this synergistic relationship literally changed the face of today’s church. A book filled with great insights any spiritual leader can benefit from, this is a story that needs to be told.”

With all respect to the many other positive reviewers and the author, this book was less about management wisdom from the great Peter Drucker and more about the author's religion. Nothing against the author's enthusiasm for his beliefs and church but I feel students of management will be shortchanged buying this book. I struggled to take notes on principles of Drucker and learned more about the business of today's mega churches. If that is why you bought the book, you are in luck. In short, many other books about Drucker will help you grow your management skills.

I was really let down by this book. An interview of the author made this book sound like "if you've never read a book by Peter Drucker, this one compresses all of his important information into a single volume ". It was more of a memoir of the author than anything. If you are a Bob Buford fan you might like it. I'd never heard of him, but was very interested in Peter Drucker. I didn't gain much insight from this book.

Offering more insight into Bob Buford than Peter Drucker, it was an echo of the wisdom and insight that made Peter Drucker well loved and respected. It did make me revisit some of Drucker's work so that it a good thing.

I passed the book on to my pastors--not because I think they should emulate mega-church pastors and Buford advocates, but because Drucker has always had some great ideas for nonprofits.

DRUCKER written with capital letters should express the author’s - BOB BUFORD – admiration for Peter Drucker.
The subtitle – What a Texas Entrepreneur Learned from the Father of Modern Management – is an invitation of the reader to continue learning from Peter Drucker.
The following excerpts are original quotations from this book; where appropriate my comments are marked MC.

Lessons:
Peter didn’t own a television. Pg. 3.
Chapter 1 You may go now …
How many times had I heard him say. “Begin with the end in sight”? A dozen? A hundred? It was one of those maxims I applied to just about every project I undertook … Pg. 5.
Even as he crept past ninety, Peter remained as intellectually sharp as ever, and I could not imagine him any other way. …
Then there were the logistics of getting there, complicated by Peter’s brutal objectivity and Old World practicality. Pg. 6.
Over the years we may have met more than a hundred times, yet this was unlike any meeting I had had with Peter. Pg. 8.
Peter listened politely until I had finished and then in his inimitable style crisply ended our “discussion” of his legacy with four sentences that I remember verbatim: “I am a writer,” he began. “My legacy is my writing.”
As famed management writer Tom Peters once put it: “Drucker effectively bypassed the intellectual establishment. So it’s not surprising that they hated his guts.” But Peter didn’t care. Pg. 11.
He had been working on his legacy all his life, writing books that contained few footnotes because his thinking was original: he did not borrow from others but left a treasure of wisdom for all. Pg. 12.

MC: Peter Drucker’s lessons for our future should be taught at colleges and universities all over the world.

The book is about Bob and Drucker. There are some Drucker gems and bit of an insight into Drucker as a person but it is by no means a book about Drucker or his teachings, if one were exclusively looking for that. As a Drucker fan I enjoyed this additional insight into his life and I am grateful that Bob wrote this book to share these stories.

Everyone who knows management philosophy knows about Peter Drucker...but not from this perspective. And as an added bonus, you also learn about Bob Buford, a very successful Texas TV network owner who decided in his mid-life years that pursuing money was not as satisfying as pursuing a life of significance. An excellent read for putting balance in your life. The pursuit of money is not the end game...nor the pursuit of happiness...it's the pursuit of living a life of significance and the people you help along the way that counts.

Drucker & Me is an incredible read. It is the homage which a great leader pays to his mentor, allowing us to peer into what that intimate relationship looked like. Bob Buford’s transparency captures our attention and allows us to learn what we would not be able to find in those famed management books - the story behind the genus and the generous character of a great man.

As Bob captures their relationship he intersperses the book with nuggets of tremendous truths which we can apply to our lives and our jobs. But the real value is showing how a successful man realized that he can become even more successful by becoming a mentoree and then turning around and mentoring others.

If someone as successful as Bob Buford can grow as a person under the guiding hand of a mentor how about us. Then shouldn’t we seek out those we can in turn invest out lives into in order to work toward “establishing ‘the functioning community and the functioning democracy of tomorrow.’”

Drucker defined Bob’s mission was to “transform the latent energy of American Christianity into active energy.”

The book challenges us all to turn our own latent energy into active energy as we invest in other and allow others to invest in us.

This is a must read for anyone wanting to become what they were designed to be in their personal as well as professional life. http://booksummaries.tomlaw.org
