Book Description

August 1998
Drugs and Death is an interactive, multimedia CD-ROM on the dangers and unforeseen consequences of illegal drug abuse. It is intended for use by parents, teenagers, or anyone working with young people who are at risk for using illegal drugs. The presentation contains information on the effects of drug use not generally known to those outside the medical community. Adults and teens will find this CD-ROM to be powerful and educational.

Drugs and Death is presented in a graphic and easily understood manner. Written by forensic pathologist and medical examiner Joseph C. Rupp, M.D., the material is based on drug-related deaths from medical examiner case files. Photographs from the scenes and autopsies of these deaths are used to demonstrate the damaging effects of illegal drug use on the human body.

Schools, health care institutions, law enforcement agencies, social service organizations, and community drug education programs will also find Drugs and Death to be a valuable addition to existing drug training materials. There is nothing else like this program currently available.

The presentation is contained on a single CD-ROM disc and runs on Macintosh or Windows. It is divided into five topics: * Heroin * Cocaine and Amphetamine * Marijuana * Psychedelics * Inhalants. Each topic takes approximately thirty minutes to complete.

Also included is a quiz that allows teachers to evaluate student comprehension of the material.

Please Note: Due to its graphic content, this presentation may not be appropriate for pre-teenagers. Viewer discretion is advised.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Drugs and Death is a hybrid CD-ROM which will run on both Macintosh and Windows PCs.

Windows Requires: Pentium 133MHz processor or better, Windows 95/98/NT 4.0 or later, Quicktime 4.0 (included on this CD), 16-bit sound card, Color monitor with 640x480 pixels or better.

Macintosh Requires: PowerPC processor, MacOS 8.1 or later, Quicktime 4.0 (included on this CD), Color monitor with 640x480 pixels or better.

From the Author

There is a group of individuals who will never use illegal drugs under any circumstances. It is not in their nature to do so. A second group of individuals is destined to use illegal drugs no matter what they learn or are taught. However, a large third group may or may not become drug abusers depending upon upbringing, peer pressure, experience, and education. It is to this third group that this work is dedicated. If just one young person is spared the misery of drug dependence or premature death as the result of viewing this presentation, then it will have been worth the effort that went into its creation. Joseph C. Rupp, M.D., Ph.D.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely powerful, October 17, 2005

This review is from: Drugs and Death : Profiles of Illegal Drug Abuse (CD-ROM)
A powerful presentation. This extremely graphic presentation is one of the most effective and affecting presentation on the dangers of drug use and abuse that I have ever seen. Its intensly graphic nature serves to highlight the commen age fallacy that drug use can be a fleeting and harmless flirtation. This guide illustrates the underlying compund cyclic nature of drug use that can quickly thrust the user into a network of unforseen problems. Most of us are familiar with burn outs but one would be surprised at how many drug users and pushers started out as mere burnouts until they become trapped beyond what they could bear, usually taking their own lives. Its a shocking wake up call to the misleading information society that suggests drug use is a personal choice that does not interfere with the safety of society. One would be amazed at how erroneous that type of subjective argument is, especially after coming away from this highly detailed presentation.
