Rocco Deluca's "Drugs 'N Hymns" is a return to roots record in many respects for the now Burden-less Rocco. His first full solo release is stripped down, sparse, and carries with it only what is necessary. What is necessary and beautifully evident is the authenticity Rocco brings to his art. The feeling he creates and transmits through music can channel into your own soul when you allow yourself to sit still and let it wash into you. From the painstakingly personal introspection of 'Lucky's' profound lyrics to the dark and gritty rawness of the Delta Blues stomper 'Amen', the warm playfulness of 'Windows' and the soulful contradiction and marriage of sin and salvation in the eponymous title track, Rocco reveals the true poetry of self expression through the medium of music. You can always tell when art is honest or contrived, and the gift that Rocco shares is pure and clear. One notable highlight is the two track combination of "They Stride Like Gods" and "Snake Oil Salesman". 'They Stride' opens like a slide guitar fever dream spliced into the undercurrent of a tribal beat, from which a chanted hum emerges and ascends until it literally provides the transition into "Snake Oil Salesman" by breathing life into the song. Snake Oil Salesman itself is a haunting merging of a number of musical influences, notably the darker side of Appalachian folk.

These are songs inspired by places, travels, shaped by the mood and aura of a time and place. Every song by Rocco is crafted from a story from his heart and interpretation of his environment, and can organically be translated by the listener to identify with in whatever way their own soul finds most suitable. Drugs 'N Hymns is real music inspired by the bluesmen and buskers, the troubadours of old.

Rocco has always performed very delicate songs as well as rock/blues. This album is the delicate side of Rocco DeLuca. Drugs 'N Hymns reflects the stripped down acoustic performing Rocco has been doing of late. He has stated this album was really "anti-produced" in the sense that he recorded it by himself in a room - not a studio - with help from friends. There is an ethereal quality and emotional intensity and the lyrics are artfully crafted. There is also a creative use of effects which may perhaps be influenced by his previous paring with Daniel Lanois. Kudos to DeLuca for not repeating himself on any of his releases. His art is true self-expression without formulaic trappings. Elements of this album remind me of some of the great turn of the century Delta Blues and folk artists and at times there is a sense that DeLuca is channeling some ancient musical forms. For me the stand out tracks are Lucky, My My, Amen, Snake Oil Salesman, Windows and Drugs 'N Hymns. A beautiful, soulful, pure album with hypnotic rhythms and melodies. Haunting.

This album is very different than his previous albums. After a third listen I think it is my favorite go his last three. It feels honest, subtle, raw and beautiful.

Beautiful, intimate, honest album. Few overdubs, some loops, but mostly just Rocco and his resonator. The songs are brilliant. His voice is the star of the show. New album coming out soon with more of a contribution from Daniel Lanois. Or so I've heard. I hope. I can't wait! This is actually one of my personal favorite albums in a long time. But probably not for everyone. It's not commercial and it's very spiritual. So there you go!

Rocco, and my son and I, used to sit in my 'hot tub', watch Football, and 'get hammered' in Lake Elsinore, Ca.. I think this music represents his honorable outlook on Life, Time, and Space.
