Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 9 Up Riding the latest anti-drug wave is this slick volume overseen by impressively credentialed editors . A foreword and an introduction plugging this series delay the onset of the book's modest quota of content. Thereafter, fully one-third consists of largely infor mation-free pictures, typically slice-of- life photos (man yawning, girl in swim suit, people in supermarket) whose main discernible function will be to re assure readers that the book is not about Martians. The text begins with an analysis of sleep, concentrating on finds from human lab studies. Next it takes up insomnia, including a survey of possible causes and remedies, stress ing the usefulness of ``sleep disorder centers.'' There is a discussion of the effects, pro and con, of sleeping pills. The rest of the book suggests the ele ments of a comprehensive insomnia treatment plan: drugs when appropri ate, influences of food and behavior, and specific recommendations for the insomniac. There are charts for self-ob servation and a full listing of state and territorial drug abuse agencies. In all, this cluttered and diffusely targeted of fering seems not particularly well de signed either to encourage potential re searchers or to discourage abusers. Paul Bogrow, Pasadena , Calif.
