Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8-- Each book provides a list of hotlines and organizations to help young people and their families. Your Friends gives brief information about types of drugs, from tobacco and marijuana to crack, cocaine, and heroin, and presents fictionalized situations to teach readers how to avoid peer pressure. The writing style is choppy; dialogue is frequently stiff and unnatural; the full-color and black-and-white photographs are not always coordinated with the text. Other titles with more information include Arnold Madison's Drugs and You! (Messner); Margaret Hyde's Know about Drugs (Walker, both 1990); and the ``Drug Alert'' series (21st Century Books). Fictionalized incidents are put to better use in Your Brothers and Sisters , which addresses the problems of family codependency. McFarland points out enabling behavior that perpetuates continued substance use by addicts, and suggests alternate actions as well as sources for help for those coping with drug-abusing siblings. A good complement, with more in-depth discussion, is Judith S. Seixas's Living with a Parent Who Takes Drugs (Greenwillow, 1989).
