5.0 out of 5 stars the perfect sludge album, August 8, 2004
This review is from: Drull (Audio CD)
Ever listened to sludge? It's a bit different from doom in that, in my mind at least, sludge bands like EHG, Grief or Corrupted remind me of grind with extremely lethargic tempos and sans blast beats. No wonder members of grind bands are fans of sludge and vice versa. Goatsblood plays this relationship out perfectly with this, their second album and a masterful display of how sludge should sound. The band feels like their fighting at every step to keep the song going when suddenly they'll lurch into a quick grind segment before just dropping back into a snail's pace crawl just as abruptly. Sludge bands aren't the sort you usually look at as hectic but Goatsblood manage to keep you on your toes and do a fairly admirable job of avoiding coming off like a EHG or Grief clone. Given the relative lack of sludge bands compared to other forms of heavy music it would be easy to just be an also ran and copy the handful of well known acts but Goatsblood does nothing of the sort. If your into these guys I recommend checking out Rwake too, you might find them much to your liking
