5.0 out of 5 stars phat jungle jams on the ragga tip, November 29, 1999
By
This review is from: Drum & Bass 3 (Audio CD)
DJ Hype serves up a massive helping of jungle's ruffest riddims. There are anthems all around for all da rude bwoys. The album kicks off with the classic "War in 94" and grooves into other mad ragga 'choons by such notables as Dillinja, Andy C, and Krome & Time. Everything is smoothly mixed and the song selection is fantastic. This should be in every junglist's collection whether be jamming at home or blasting it in tha car. lighta!

DJ Hype mixes some of the toughest of 1994. If you never heard of Jungle Drum And Bass or want to get more knowledge of the ragga hardstep sound...this is one for your collection. This is a must!

5.0 out of 5 stars Drum & Bass Selection 3, September 16, 2004

This review is from: Drum & Bass 3 (Audio CD)
Flawless track selection. Almost all these songs (with the exception of War in '94) are impossible to find on another CD in unmixed form. You might could get some of 'em on vinyl. My favorites are Booyaaa! by Amazon II and Red One's Alive and Kicking. I just got into jungle in Spring of 2003 and this was one of the first DNB CD's i bought, and it is still one of my most listened to CD's. But like i said, it's mixed, DJ Hype's scratching can be annoying at times, but there is too much good jungle on here to pass up.

i kinda like ragga jungle, so i bought this cd(along with volumes 4 and 5). i don't know why, but the covers of these cd's remind me of that dire straights video hehehehe.ok, so if you like ragga jungle buy this cd. but i highly recomend vol.5 because it has the "super sharp shooter" track on it, and vol.5 get's the most play in my cd player as compared to vol.4 and 3.peace

5.0 out of 5 stars Amen breaks at their finest., September 1, 2011
This review is from: Drum & Bass 3 (Audio CD)
You'll absolutely adore this set if you like hard hitting amens. I remember buying this album in 1995 and having my mind completely blown at how hard it is. It reminds me of old Remarc, Jumping Jack Frost, earlier Renegade Hardware releases and Shy Fx sets from 1993 and 1994. Particularly significant is DJ Hype's scratching prowess on a number of the tracks (he was one of few jungle DJs that did this well)and how well the mixes are. Case in point, the mix into Ganja Man from Dread Bass is absolutely amazing. It's jungle mixing at its finest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jungle NOT drum & bass!, November 18, 2006
By
This review is from: Drum & Bass 3 (Audio CD)
Why the distinction? Especially when "Drum & Bass" is in the title? Because this is before the music got killed by "2 Step", "ambient" (no thanks to LTJ Bukem"), "intelligent", synth-wash (see ambient), "jazzy", "progressive", and all the other ruinous intrusions on what was an amazingly strong and pure original London sound. Which, I might add, none of the London music press liked until it became more popular! D&B was a new term when this CD came out and soon came to mean everything but "that old ragga sound" that was Jungle. And, of all the compilations to come flooding out, as the style peaked and gained notoriety, this series (particularly vol's 3 and 4) was the absolute best. A blistering mix of underground tracks mixed and scratched by DJ Hype, with bottomless, rolling bass lines beneath. It's a shame this is out of print and some jerk is charging you $60. for it, but it's an amazing capsule of a music that roared like a lion before it turned back into techno.
