This CD focuses on Gene Krupa as a bandleader rather than a soloist. Gene's Band could really swing and the vocals by Irene Daye are a bonus. If you are a fan of this era, you will love this CD.

Wonderful compilation capturing Krupa prior to the more famous stellar material he recorded with Roy Eldridge and Anita O'Day.

Coming after his stint with Benny Goodman, these sides are clear and with great sound considering the era...You won't be dissapointed with this fine collection spanning the early 1940's..

What first got me excited about this CD was not just the 1st chair playing of Krupa & his band, but the terrific sound clarity even with some minor hiss, most of the material is very early 1940's. I compared this with another CD by Woody Herman Greatest Hits collection. Herman had a great band, but for some reson Krupa just swings better. Solid buy for all you gone cats! DIG!!!

Outside of Drum Boogie there is not one song that I want to listen to after several times around

Tuxedo Junction --No Name Jive -- and other covers of Big Band Standards leave you pleading for the originals

I think this first Krupa solo album is one of his best. The sound is very clear, as his solos and beat ideas. A lot of swing and great sticking!! In my opinion, the first half of his career (his early days in Red Nichols Band, in the Goodman Orchestra and Quartet, and in this album) is where the pure power of his beat lives.
Krupa and drum lovers need to buy it.

Great set from Columbia Records, Sony nowadays, or whoever owns that label now. Excellent quality. Just a smidgin of Gene's 1938-1940 recordings. All pre O'Day and Eldridge. Band actually did more jazz in those earlier days. You might ask how can one get all of Gene's recordings from 1938-1967? Answer, if you still have a cassette player is. Mike's Big Band Club P.O. Box 41324 Norfolk, VA 23541. He has everything Gene, Benny, Tommy, Duke, Jimmy, Cab, Earl, Guy, Blue, Harry, Will, Les, Woody, Ben, Joe, Louis, Ina Ray, Ziggy, Russ, Georgie, Tony, Teddy, etc ever recorded on cassettes.

I was expecting the drumming on this to be a little more promintent and out front. A few drum solos perhaps? I gave it two complete listens. The next time I use it will be as a drink coaster.
