5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent intro, August 30, 2005

This review is from: Drum and Dance / 30 Doumbek and Djembe Rhythms (Audio CD)
This CD is an excellent complement to a live drumming class. When practicing at home, it provides clear vocalization of the rhythms, CD jacket has the rhythms written out, and there are simple and complex variations on each.

5.0 out of 5 stars Drum Happy!, March 29, 2008
This review is from: Drum and Dance / 30 Doumbek and Djembe Rhythms (Audio CD)
this is just what I have been looking for. Two different ways to drum, one with actual drumming rhythms and the other with spoken word so you know exactly what to do with your hands..... awesome CD. If you are a beginning drummer this is a must have!!!!!!!!!!! Carol in Montana

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Educational, February 6, 2008
Though it seems that each musician speaks the rhythms in his/her own way, this is a great CD for learning Belly Dance beats. Great for teaching various dance techniques.

5.0 out of 5 stars From The Artist, October 30, 2009
"THE instructional hand drum CD -- featuring 30 of the most popular Middle Eastern Rhythms used in music and dance today. Audio quality, presentation, etc., every aspect designed to exceed any other project of its kind."

*I would like to thank everyone for the success of the original CD (which has sold out multiple runs), but at the present time, do to the ever decreasing demand for physical CD's, I have decided to discontinue producing as such. However, all the tracks are now available here as MP3 downloads. I have recently added the instructional text from within the inset of the physical CD, for all to view, save, copy and/or print from your own computer (from the "see customer images" area. Of course I hope you also purchase the MP3 album as well). I hope this will assist all in continuing to utilize and promote this product among various dancing and drumming groups. Please help spread the word. As I have stated previously, my intent was to produce the best possible product of its kind, hopefully the test of time has demonstrated this success.

Happy Dancing and Drumming!

T. Roy

(Most recently, I've been studying Indian Tabla with renowned and virtuoso performer/teacher/author Samir Chatterjee, and disciple/virtuoso Debapriya Nayak).

5.0 out of 5 stars 30 Rhythms, October 14, 2009

This is a very good sampler for learning ME rhythms. I bought it to use as a dancer, to better hear the patterns and pulses in each type of song... between this and an in-person dance-to-rhythms class, I am motivated to learn the Doumbek myself. I might be horrible, but it will not be because of this CD: Mr Roy clearly plays each type, and 'talks' through them as well ("doum-tek, rek-tek"...). The only drawback is the lack of printed material - this CD has gone out of physical production and I had to download it as an mp3 file. If you are lucky enough to find it, buy it quickly!

This CD is superb for increasing your knowledge of Middle-Eastern rhythms. I lead a drum circle, and this CD has been an amazing addition to my 'bag of tricks' as I share rhythms with others. I learn a few of the rhythms before the drum circle, then I teach them to the rest of the group. Needless to say, using this CD makes me look like a pro when I am teaching others (they all think I know what I am doing). I have had absolute beginners thank me after our drum circles for sharing these rhythms in a manner so easy to embrace.

T. Roy's method of helping you memorize difficult patterns is most amazing. If you were to listen to the rhythm alone, you would swear it would be near impossible to learn. However, T. Roy teaches a nmemonic method of syllables that represents different tones and patterns. Before long you will be quickly repeating phrases like "Teka-kaTekaDum", and then playing the pattern is a snap. What a find this CD has been!

Please note: T. Roy recently posted the text for these patterns below the image of the CD (under "Customer Images"). Be sure to download the text as it will facilitate learning the patterns. Nevertheless, you will want to purchase the MP3 album since just studying the text alone will be difficult and won't get you more than studying patterns on any of a dozen websites.

Again, this CD has been a tremendous value for me, one of the best purchases I have made in my journey to becoming a better drummer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but...., September 23, 2007

This CD is good but cramming 30 tracks onto a single CD means the tracks are very short. I would have preferred a few less rhythms and longer tracks to play along to.

Also...I'm not sure what instrument he's playing but it doesn't sound much like a dumbek - I'm guessing it's a clay dumbek with zills in it (those little bells a tambourine has).
