Book Description

March 31, 2000
"Drum Grooves presents: Groovin' to the Music" contains an introduction to a vast array of music styles for the beginning and intermediate drummer.

With 50 great tunes on CD, and their accompanying scores, the learning drummer can now play along with the actual recordings AND decipher the drum parts note for note.

The drum parts in the songs were designed with simplicity and consistency in mind for the very purpose of encouraging the drummer to play along with the music.

The recordings have the drums on one track and the music on the other. When desirable, pan out the music to focus on the drums without distraction, or pan out the drums to play with the music alone.

Enjoy the book's insight on practicing, reading, technique, equipment, attitude, music styles, and teachers.

It is VERY good!

The lessons ... are great for new drummers and drummers with some advancement but never [learned] the textbook basics -- John Lazzaro - Cypress, CA

About the Author

Dana Oliver is a professional drummer/teacher who lives in the Los Angeles area.

He has played drums for nearly twenty-five years and currently teaches at Yamaha School of Music in Cerritos, CA, in addition to his busy performance schedule.

Dana believes in the perpetual pursuit of knowledge in music, as well as in general, to improve one's life, and continues himself to study technique under the tutelage of world-renowned drum instructor and Doctor of Music Richard Wilson, also in the Los Angeles area. Dana has studied under Richard for nearly ten years now. Richard was featured in Modern Drummer magazine several years ago and has quite an impressive background and list of credentials.

Dana searched continually for several years to find resources that would encourage his students to play along with music, live or recorded. Professional recordings of pop artists seemed to leave the student behind, and therefore discouraged. This has always made playing along with recordings difficult and uninviting.

In the process of composing material for use with his own students, it became obvious that this type of educational tool would be greatly beneficial to learning drum students everywhere, hence Groovin' to the Music was born.

5.0 out of 5 stars Drum Grooves presents : Groovin' to the Music, May 4, 2000

This book and CD are wonderful! The CD is packed with really tasteful tunes that are quite enjoyable to play to. In fact, this is the only thing I've found so far that is continually exciting, yet challenging. I wish this had been available when I was younger (I'm now 28). It's never too late to learn, I guess. Bottom line: I think they did a wonderful job putting this book and CD together. I highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Learn to play all styles of drumming, September 4, 2001

This review is from: Drum Grooves presents : Groovin' to the Music with Audio CD (Paperback)
Having taken lessons for only two years with a top rated teacher(find a good teacher;it makes learning easier)we went to "drum grooves" and started working on all the material provided. People are amazed of with the variety of playing I demonstrate having studied for such a short time. I owe it to having purchased "drum grooves" at the school I study at. I hope Dana Oliver puts out more good work to expand on his knowledge shared with us.
