A lauded New York-based quartet with roots in modern dance and experimental anti-rock bands, Hugo Largo featured two bass guitars, an electric violin and the indescribable vocals of Mimi Goese. With no real percussion (hence the ironic title) and little guitar, 1987’s Drum has a subtle instrumental presence: slow, even bass lines are countered by soaring violin and punctuated by refreshing silence. Drum was co-produced by Michael Stipe (who also sings back-up and plays organ on this remarkable debut). Features new artwork.
