Drumming up passion in the 8th grade,
By A Customer
This review is from: Drums of Passion (Audio CD)
I teach 8th grade in an urban, primarily African American Charter School. I like to open my kids up to a variety of cultural experiences, ranging from their own backgrounds to those very foreign to them. One of the ways that I do this is through music. Well, my kids love "Drums of Passion" so much, that one of them apparently took it home and forgot to return it, so I am here to order another...they listen to this CD so much that they know the words "by heart", even if they don't quite understand them. It is a pleasure to watch them voluntarily play Olatunji's music, rather than beg to listen to popular favorites...if your percussion can win the hearts of 13 year olds, you've got to have something going!

IF u are a fan of traditional uncorrupted african drum music, this is the absolute best cd to get. The only problem is that it is pretty short at 37min running time. but it is still worth it.

THE ORIGINAL PARTY MUSIC,
By DANIEL M. HART "DAN" (MA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Drums of Passion (Audio CD)
This music on a good stereo system is guaranteed to get you moving to the music, and the drums will bring down the plaster from your ceiling! Crank it up and party! (For some reason this copy only has eight songs. Missing is "Menu Di Ye Jewe". There is another copy with nine songs.)

A purely ingenious cd,

This cd is amazing. If you are a Mickey Hart and Planet Drum fan you would deffinatly enjoy Olatunji's Drums of Passion. Olatunji is a trailblazer in world percussion music. My favorites are Akiwowo ( Chant to the Trainman) and Jin Go La Ba ( Drums of Passion). This cd is a necessity to all percussion and world music lovers!

I first discovered this album back in the mid-1970's and still have my original LP copy, though the grooves are worn out. It's finally out on CD and none too soon. If you're tired of pre-programmed, pre-kiddie, music-in-a-can, everything-sounds-alike, unoriginal-unimaginative, drum machine-coma-inducing and downright boring music, give this one a spin. It will get you off your derrier(spelling?).

Inspired Many Musicians,

This is excellent traditional African music using various percussion and vocals. Very vibrant. Many tribal sensibilities are found in the rhythms."Jingo Lo Ba (Drums Of Passion)" was covered by Santana on their 1969 debut album. Great traditional music.

A star of the 1964-65 NY World's Fair,
By
This review is from: Olatunji! Drums Of Passion (MP3 Download)
I saw Olatunji as a kid while visiting one of the African Nation Pavilions at the NY World's Fair in Flushing Meadow in the summer of 1965 (the one with the Unisphere symbol).
He got a lot of exposure at that fair, and his show was a sensation with audience after audience, and no doubt a highlight for many visitors. His dynamic ensemble really gave you the feeling (within what was, for the time, a very lavish Corporate/technological exhibition complex), you were, at least momentarily, magically enclosed within an exotic foreign culture. My mother bought the Olatunji album shortly after that and it was one of the albums I grew up with. With the profusion of drum circles and the participation/percussion-jams in some areas these days, Olatunji's music seems as "now" as ever. And the fact remains: The Man's music still rocks!

i don't know the original impact of this album but i was just amazed when i first heard this. such a human album- utterly basic yet will get you at the deepest reaches. it would be interesting to hear what a techno dj could do with this.
