I am a drum instructor from Tacoma, Washington. Having worked with dozens of students with this book over the past 4 years I consider it the ideal starter book. Drumset Essentials starts with an introduction to important concepts of limb independence and stick control. It does not contain a "legend" of which drum corresponds to which line and space on the staff, so I typically make sure a student knows what is what before they go home with it.

The exercises start with quarter note hi-hat beats - a total of 10 exercises - then the same beats on the right-facing page, this time with eighth note hi-hat. Most of my students have a tougher time with the quarter note beats so you might try the eighth notes first.

Because the beats are the same from page to page except for the hi-hat part, a student gets to experience how the feel changes between these same beats. So by introducing this "limitation" a student immediately learns how effective a simple hi-hat figure is in transforming the entire feel of the groove. Very smart authoring.

There is not much discussion of dynamics or just how the beats might be used in context with music but from a teacher's point of view this is perfect: I like to be able to provide this for the student on my own. In other words, the book focuses on content and lets me provide the context.

I would challenge any drummer who considers themselves intermediate or even advanced to work through this book's excellent finish: a study of swing grooves that progressively works a student through some of jazz's most important syncopation points.

Overall, I highly recommend this book, a 3-hour per week practice routine and a qualified private teacher. Slam-dunk, Mr. Erskine!

I have more experience with Erskins advanced books but I'm using the book to teach beginers and as aways Peter's books are great to work from. Well orginized, clear explainations, great CD.

Format: Paperback
The book starts with a good intro of drums and how to play. However, the author fails to explain the types of notes, at the beginning of the book, or before each lesson. Relying on the CD alone is not the best way to learn. The book even starts with phrases which the student wouldn't need this book if he knew them. Moreover, the last lesson is about the jazz swing, where the author introduces the ride rhythm, then writes a bunch of lines without writing the ride rhythm, assuming the student would be able to memorize it and place it without having to look at it...which I believe is again enforcing auditory learning before visual learning.

The exercises in this book are really good though. It is really good for beginners who have a teacher to guide them through it. Again, the author goes from hard to easy exercises within each lesson, which forces the student to think on his own a lot.

I still haven't checked volumes 2 and 3 to see where these books lead and how the transition takes place, but I would assume that the flow is smooth and beneficial enough.
