4.0 out of 5 stars The lesser of 2 weevils, August 29, 2004
This review is from: Drunk on Light (Audio CD)
If anyone remembers, back in the early 90's there were quite a few bands who mixed electronic music with indie. My Bloody Valentine were one of the torchbearers of this movement. Others were Modest Mouse and Bark Psychosis (who have a new album out). Nowadays there have been some comebacks in the form of The Postal Service, The Real Tuesday Weld and Secret Machines. Now joining the club is London based duo Weevil (not to be mixed up with the punk band Bollweevil).

Weevil's music is simply uplifting and glorious stuff. Despite the fact that it is guitar-based rock clothed in electronica, it has a heart nestled in it's core. To listen to these guys does emit a certain amount of happiness and warmth.

The trick is that no song is complex yet there is imagination at work here. During the course of the album, voices are distorted, bleeps and blips (no bloops though) are scattered in the mix but also there are accordions and kettle drums.

Like I mentioned before the melodies here are wonderful, I'm sure if Lou Reed was listening to this he'd crack a smile as well especially at first single `Halfsmile', `Splinters' and `Bytecry'!.

If `Drunk on Light' is just the beginning stages of Weevil, then the future is definitely going to look bright for these guys.
