This review is from: Drunkard's Walk (Mass Market Paperback)
Frederik Pohl (1919) is a conspicuous member of "Sci-fi Golden Age" authors and he is still producing excellent new books. He also was editor of "Galaxy" and "If" magazines winning the Hugo Award for Best Professional Magazine for 1966, 1967 and 1968.
He has authored more than one great success as: "The Space Merchants" (1952 with C. M. Kornbluth), "Gladiator-at-law" (1955 with C. M. Kornbluth), the Hugo & Nebula winner "Gateway" (1977). "Drunkard's Walk" (1960), is an excellent yet quite underrated novel. The story is as follows: around year 2200 the world is overpopulated and University campus is a privileged place for professors and students. Here a very young and popular teacher has tried to commit suicide nine times in the last two months. He is not depressed, he doesn't consume hard stuff and he is successful. So the question is why this persistent intent goes on? The novel will follow Cornut's desperate efforts to stay alive and little by little will unveil a sinister plot against the whole world. This book is a very good sample of the author creativity, his sense of humor and social critic. I recommend this book to sci-fi fans and general public too! Reviewed by Max Yofre. |
